Memphis and Luuk de Jong on the move

FC Barcelona recorded a victory in La Liga on Sunday for the first time in almost a month. Thanks in part to goals from Memphis Depay and Luuk de Jong, Levante were beaten 3-0 at Camp Nou, giving coach Ronald Koeman some breathing room again.

After the 0-3 defeat to Bayern Munich in the Champions League and disappointing draws against Granada (1-1) and Cádiz (0-0) in the league, Barcelona finally played another good game on Sunday.

After seven minutes, Memphis took advantage of a penalty, after which De Jong, with his first goal for Barcelona, made it 2-0 within fifteen minutes. The Sevilla-hired striker shot in coolly with Aitor Fernández.

After the quick 2-0, Barcelona didn’t get into any more trouble and in extra time it became even better. Ansu Fati, who replaced Luuk de Jong in the 81st minute, put the 3-0 final score on the scoreboard. The eighteen-year-old Spaniard gave such brilliance to his comeback after ten months of injury time.

It was the first time since June 2003 that two Dutchmen are accurate in a league game of Barcelona. At the time, Marc Overmars and Patrick Kluivert scored against Valencia.

Koeman and Frenkie de Jong sit out suspension

Unlike Luuk de Jong, Memphis did complete the ninety minutes against Levante. Former Ajacied Sergiño Dest, who provided the assist at the 2-0, was also allowed to start, while Frenkie de Jong was suspended for his red card on Thursday against Cádiz. Incidentally, Koeman also watched from the stands, as he too was sent off in that game and was suspended.

With the win, Barcelona climbed to fifth place in La Liga, with five points less than league leader Real Madrid, who have played one more game.

It is unclear what that means for coach Koeman. President Joan Laporta demanded three wins in a row from Koeman almost two weeks ago after the defeat at home to Bayern Munich (0-3).
