Golden Ball election adjusted after commotion

The Golden Ball for the best footballer in the world is now awarded on the basis of performance in a season instead of in a calendar year.

France Football, the French weekly newspaper that has been organizing the election since 1956, has made the necessary adjustments to the design of the election after all the commotion about the last edition.

The Golden Ball went to Lionel Messi for the seventh time last year, which France Football came under much criticism.

According to many football followers, Robert Lewandowski should have received the award.

From now on, the election will take place after the season, which runs from August to July. The jury that makes the nominations no longer only consists of journalists from France Football, but also a few other experts, including former top striker Didier Drogba.

Previously, journalists from 170 countries were allowed to vote, but that number is being reduced.

Individual achievements outweigh prizes

The criteria will also state that individual achievements of a footballer and soccer star weigh more heavily than collective achievements, such as the prizes won with a club or country.

France Football also wants voting journalists to look purely at a person’s performance in one season rather than throughout his or her entire career.

“The Ballon d’Or is not a still life, but something very much alive. A prize that lies in the great gulf between tradition and modernity,” said editor-in-chief Pascal Ferré. “We think we need to evolve the Ballon d’Or this year, to ensure that this trophy maintains its status after 65 editions.”

Messi is the record holder with seven elections. Cristiano Ronaldo was named the best player in the world five times. Johan Cruijff and Marco van Basten both received the Golden Ball three times, Ruud Gullit won the prize once.

Virgil van Dijk finished second behind Messi in the 2019 election.
