Governor Florida revokes Disney World special status,

Governor Ron DeSantis of the US state of Florida on Friday signed a law that strips Disney of the special status that the company has in the city of Orlando. For decades, the entertainment corporation was empowered to govern the city, where it has a resort, as a local government. That power is now being revoked.

The special authority allowed Disney to collect taxes and guarantee essential public services, such as garbage collection and water purification, in the district in which Disney World is located.

The change follows Disney’s condemnation of the “Don’t say gay” law passed in Florida in March.

This law prohibits elementary schools from talking about sexual orientation or gender identity in class.

Disney initially kept a low profile about the law, but after criticism, the company, which has more than 75,000 employees in Florida, still spoke out.

Ceo Bob Chapek promised to support the LGBTIQ+ community through a donation of 5 million dollars (converted to about 4.6 million euros) to the Human Rights Campaign and other organizations to protect the rights of LGBTIQ+ people.

He also said he would talk to DeSantis and Disney stopped all political donations in Florida. Late last month, Disney pledged to work to ensure the law is repealed.
