Gretchen reveals she was a victim of domestic violence

At 62 years old, Gretchen has had a long career on TV and in the spotlight. The singer has participated in The Farm 5in 2012, and the reality show Power Couple; both attractions on Record TV. At the beginning of the year, he was on the reality show The Masked Singer Brazila reality show hosted by Ivete Sangalo on TV Globo. Despite all the success on TV and the internet, the “queen of memes” revealed in an interview with Quem magazine that she has suffered domestic violence.

“I have experienced domestic violence of all kinds. I have been physically, psychologically and emotionally abused in all forms. In some relationships for a shorter period of time and in others for a longer period of time. I have had to put myself aside as an artist several times to avoid the abuse. He even put someone in my office to control my shows, to lie to the booking agents that my dates were booked so that I could not work. I have lived with this for seven years. But I have never needed to seek help. I realized that this was not right, but we were raised in a society that said this was normal, that you were not supposed to challenge it. In my time, there was no such thing as reporting. It was a culture that women were beaten by their husbands and that this was normal. An idea that was passed down from generation to generation. So, because of this, I kept going until the moment when I matured and became stronger. I made the decision myself.”Gretchen explained.

Alongside her husband, Esdras de Souza, they help several victims of domestic violence in the Ocitocine-se project – the famous woman is the project's godmother and helps other women recover. Together with the NGO Mulher Reviva, ''Ocitocine-se'' offers cooking, beauty and technology workshops.

“This project will care for, protect and restore the self-esteem of women who have suffered domestic violence. Esdras completed his postgraduate degree in music therapy precisely because he believes it is important to restore the self-confidence and self-esteem of these women.”says Gretchen.
