There are few successful franchises that started in books or movies and have quality games. In fact, there aren’t many that even have acceptable games, say Game of Thrones fans.

Hogwarts Legacy is an exception to this quasi-rule in the games industry and fulfills the dream of Harry Potter fans with flying colors. Even with its open world sometimes falling into the traps of the genre, in general it fulfills the role of putting the player inside the universe of the franchise.

Hogwarts down to the last detail

Here the first step is to create your wizard from scratch. Being able to choose the house that will be part of it, editing its appearance in detail and having your room inside the magic school is far superior to reliving a story already told in other media. After a somewhat lengthy tutorial, the player can go around the school collecting missions, learning spells and exploring every secret hidden behind its walls and under the ground. Those first hours after the tutorial are the most fun in the game, as the amount of new things that are inserted into the gameplay and the scope of the open world which makes your jaw drop to the ground with so many details always make you eager to play more. Exploring is always fun and there are things hidden in every corner of the school and in various locations around the world. The menu and map interface is perfect for quickly navigating between what you want and helps this dynamic to become even more intuitive, even when the entire game world is already open. It’s a shame that the protagonist talks so much to himself, even giving solutions to puzzles, an annoying craze in high-budget games today that needs to change. In the franchise’s timeline, the adventure here takes place in the 1890s, long before the story told in the Harry Potter books. None of the main characters from the films are present in the game. However, you get that silly but rewarding feeling of recognizing every corner of the school. There are dozens of iconic locations such as the common rooms, libraries, staircases with moving paintings, ghosts and much more. All these environments bring collectibles that tell more about the place and hide secrets behind locked doors that require specific spells to be opened.

Around the school there is an even bigger world to explore. Hogsmeade is like a HUB of shops where the player can get his first wand, flying broom and all items like potions and magical plants to use in the adventure. There are still dozens of wizarding villages to visit, along with cursed forests and caves to explore.

History is weakness

It is a pity that the story does not follow this rich open world and falls short of expectations, even wasting the potential of the school as a gameplay element. Instead of following the daily life of the school, its students and the rivalry between the houses, Avalanche, the studio that developed the game, preferred to bet on a story that uses the school as a secondary element, focusing on its protagonist as a chosen one. He enters his fifth year already and has incredible potential for magic. From day one, he has been involved with Goblins, Goblins and entities from the past. This dynamic is repeated with most other activities and little content feels really important when away from the main and side quests. The combat surprises in a positive way. At the beginning of the game, he is well dosed and each encounter is eagerly awaited, especially in dueling missions around the school. This is running out as the game becomes a standard open world, but the new spells keep the experience fresh for a long time, even if it gets a little tired after the second third of the game, which no longer has so many new things to add. It is possible to make several combos with spells that are divided between offensive, defensive, curses, control and more. Couple this with the dynamics of dodging and parrying and the combat is very dynamic and fun. More enemy types would have made this formula work even better, as the variety doesn’t keep up with the amount of new locations to explore in the world and also contributes to sameness over time.
