How can you recognize and remove asbestos?

How can you recognize and remove asbestos?

Until 2001, asbestos was widely used as a building material because it is fire-resistant and strong. The chance that asbestos can be found in buildings that were constructed before that year is therefore high. However, new insights show that the presence of asbestos is not without danger. It is therefore important that risky asbestos is removed. An asbestos laboratory or expert can help you with this, but you can also check for asbestos yourself.

What is asbestos?

Asbestos is a collective name for natural minerals that consist of microscopic, needle-like fibers, also called asbestos fibers.
There are two types of asbestos:
  • In bonded or solid asbestos, the fibres are firmly fixed in the carrier material. A typical example is slates made of asbestos cement. If they are not damaged, they are harmless.
  • In the case of non-bonded or loose asbestos, the fibres can easily be released. Material with loose asbestos, such as insulation material around heating pipes, is therefore much more dangerous.

Ironing boards, corrugated iron, brake pads, carpeting, laboratory equipment, pipes, liquid filters, gas masks, insulation material…: these are just a few examples of the thousands of products in which asbestos was processed until the end of the last century. There is no need to panic. Looking at or even touching asbestos is not dangerous. If the material is in good condition, the fibres are usually very firmly attached. Danger only occurs when, for example during a renovation, you process and “damage” the asbestos. Then you can loosen the fibres and inhale them. In most cases, you will not be able to judge with the naked eye whether something contains asbestos.

Why is asbestos dangerous?

Asbestos is harmful to your health. The chance of getting sick is greater if you have inhaled a large amount of loose asbestos fibres on a regular basis. Smoking in combination with inhaling asbestos increases the risks even more.

Inhaling asbestos fibres can cause you to develop various conditions:

  • Mesothelioma: a malignant tumor of the pleura or peritoneum
  • Asbestosis: a condition in which scar tissue forms in the lungs
  • Pleural plaques: thickenings of the pleura that can calcify
  • Lung cancer
  • Laryngeal cancer
  • Ovarian cancer

Signs that indicate asbestos

The best source of information about asbestos is the asbestos inventory of a building. This describes which asbestos-containing materials are present and in what condition they are. Currently, only employers are required to have an asbestos inventory drawn up for buildings in which they employ workers, but by 2032, every building in Flanders will have to have an asbestos certificate.
If there is no asbestos inventory, there are still ways to find out whether a building contains asbestos. For example, consult the year of production: if the material was produced or installed between 1945 and 2001, there is a good chance that it contains asbestos. This chance is even greater if it dates from the period 1955 to 1988. A roof or facade cladding made of artificial slates or corrugated sheets installed before 1990 always contains asbestos. You can also recognise asbestos by the texture of a material:
  • Honeycomb: most asbestos sheets have a honeycomb-shaped waffle structure. Usually there are multiple layers.
  • 'Asbestos flowers': asbestos can be further recognised by white spots spread over the material, the so-called asbestos flowers.
  • Asbestos fiber bundles can often be seen with the naked eye in places where the material has broken, for example.

Asbestos Removal

If the material or product is in good condition and does not really need to be removed, then leave it alone. That is the safest option. Make sure that people who will have to work on it later are warned. An employer of a company that comes to carry out work at your company is also obliged to identify the materials that are suspected of containing asbestos before starting the work. If the material or product is in poor condition or needs to be removed, for example for a renovation, then thorough precautions must be taken. In doing so, it is especially important to ensure that as few fibres as possible end up in the air, and that no fibres are spread that stick to clothing or skin.

Want to remove asbestos yourself?

According to the labour legislation, certain activities may only be carried out by a company that is recognised for this purpose. The addresses of these companies can be found on this website. Some work with a limited risk of exposure may be carried out by the company's own staff. There are strict regulations for this: for example, the employees concerned must be registered on a list and receive training and written instructions on all precautions in advance. If you are a private individual who has to deal with asbestos, you must assess whether you are able to carry out the job safely. A specialised company certainly offers two major advantages. On the one hand, the risks are avoided as much as possible because the employees are trained to handle asbestos-containing materials, have the appropriate tools and use proven procedures, and on the other hand, the waste is disposed of correctly.

The basic rule when working on material containing asbestos is simple: prevent the formation of dust. Asbestos fibres are not dangerous as long as they are well bonded. If the material is damaged, the fibres are released. The greatest danger lies in inhaling or swallowing them. The following seven rules can limit the risk, but not eliminate it.

  1. Wet or fix the material. Wet material produces less dust than dry material. So spray the asbestos material wet before you start working on it. The use of high-pressure cleaners is out of the question. There are also special fixatives on the market to limit dust formation.
  2. Work very carefully. Try not to damage the material. Do not break it, but unscrew it. Avoid shocks during handling, for example when transferring to a waste container or during waste disposal.
  3. Do not use high-speed tools. If you do have to saw, drill or grind the material, use hand tools or certainly low-speed tools. Normal grinding discs, drills, circular saws, etc. rotate quickly and therefore create a lot of dust.
  4. Ensure good ventilation. Working outside is safer than working inside. After all, the aim is to keep the concentration of fibres in the air as low as possible. If that is not possible, you must ventilate the space in which you are working very well. Ensure there is an air flow to the outside, so that the fibres do not remain suspended in the air. Therefore, carefully seal all cracks and holes that lead to another space. It is necessary to limit the release of asbestos fibres as much as possible to prevent the air inhaled by your neighbours from being polluted.
  5. Use appropriate protective equipment. Asbestos fibres can stick to your clothing. Therefore, wear overalls and gloves that you can throw away. After work, you can dispose of them together with the other waste in the correct manner. A respirator is extremely important to protect yourself from inhaling the fibres. A normal mask is absolutely not suitable, because it does not stop the smallest fibres. Ask the seller for advice.
  6. After work, clean the room and tools thoroughly. Wet the dust released during work, wipe it up very carefully with damp cloths and add everything to the asbestos waste. Using your regular vacuum cleaner is a very bad idea. The very small asbestos fibres are not retained by the filter and are blown back into the air.
  7. Clean yourself thoroughly. Scrub yourself thoroughly in the shower after work. You should wash your hair especially carefully.

Asbestos to container park?

To find out exactly what you must/may do, it is best to contact the environmental department of your municipality or the regional government institutions that are responsible for this.

A distinction is made between waste from which the fibres can easily be released (e.g. insulation material or asbestos cord) and waste in which the fibres are firmly bound (e.g. asbestos cement products).

Asbestos-containing waste from which fibres can easily be released must be considered hazardous waste. If a specialist company is called in to remove asbestos material, this company will also take care of the removal of the waste.

Asbestos cement waste, in which the fibres are firmly bound, is treated as construction and demolition waste, although dust formation during the removal and processing of the waste must be prevented as much as possible. Private individuals can take their asbestos cement waste to container parks where construction and demolition waste is accepted.
