How often should someone with diabetes check their blood sugar?

For diabetics it is important to check their blood sugar very regularly. The blood sugars of a diabetic patient show constant fluctuations, related to insulin administration, activity, diet, stress and other factors. Through blood sugar checks one can determine how much insulin is needed at that moment.

People with type 2 diabetes usually perform blood glucose checks using a blood glucose meter. A sensor is mainly used by people with type 1 diabetes and some people with type 2 diabetes on an intensive insulin regimen.

Why test your own blood sugar?

Blood sugar tests provide immediate information on the level of blood sugar at the time of measurement. Blood sugar measurements are indicative of the right amount of insulin needed for a given situation. Without them, you are working blindly and the risk of acute disorders (hypo- and hyperglycemia) and long-term complications increases.

Testing your own blood sugar also gives you a better insight into your diabetes. By comparing your own readings with your blood sugar target numbers, you are more motivated to balance your insulin dose, diet and activity.

Those who monitor themselves also become more independent. Insulin doses can be adjusted based on the measurement results and by quickly intervening at warning signs, acute complications can be prevented. The better global sugar regulation also prevents chronic complications.

How often to test?

The frequency of the checks depends on the intensity of your treatment and activities and is always done in consultation with the doctor. To gain more insight into your glucose levels, you can (occasionally) measure a day curve, for example a 4-point day curve. This means that you do a measurement:

  • For breakfast
  • For lunch
  • Before dinner
  • Before going to sleep

If necessary, you can also measure again the next morning before breakfast.

With a 7-point curve you additionally measure at a fixed time after the main meals (for example 2 hours after the meal). In the following situations it is advisable to measure more:

  • In case of illness
  • Before, during and after physical exertion
  • In case of changes in treatment
  • On holiday or on special occasions
  • If you want to get pregnant
