Diabetes is a very serious health problem that already affects millions of people inside and outside Brazil. Fortunately, the Unified Health System (SUS) has support to provide insulin to diabetics: a hormone that helps control glucose and prevents people from getting sick.

But how can you get insulin through the SUS to treat different types of diabetes? We answer these and other questions below. Check out the next paragraphs.

What is insulin and why is it important?

The human body has countless organs and each of them works differently to guarantee life within our organism. The pancreas is responsible for the daily production of a hormone called insulin, which regulates blood glucose levels.

In general, cells need to absorb molecules — such as glucose —, but they cannot do this if the organism does not function properly. Insulin acts like a “key”, which opens the “door” to the cells and allows glucose to be absorbed. Otherwise, glucose builds up in the blood, causing problems for the body.

There are different types of diabetes and each one needs a specific type of insulin. Only a doctor can correctly diagnose the type of diabetes and specify the best insulin for each case. But, in addition to the hormone, it is essential that patients have a balanced diet and exercise, in addition to avoiding foods and liquids that harm the body, such as alcoholic beverages.

The procedure is relatively simple: you must go to the health center (UBS) closest to your home and take with you your original identity, SUS card and updated proof of residence.

You will then need to make an appointment with the unit's general practitioner. During the consultation, it is necessary to request tests that prove the patient's health condition — in this case, diabetes —, perform the tests and return to the doctor. The professional will provide the necessary documentation, proving the diagnosis of the disease and prescribing the type of insulin needed to treat it, in addition to providing information about application, diet habits, etc.

With the documentation in hand, the health center will inform you where you will need to register to obtain the medicine and, after registering, where you can collect it.

The prescription you take to withdraw the medication will only provide a specific amount of the hormone. When it runs out, you will need to return to the UBS doctor to pick up another prescription.
