Many people, especially older people, may not know that it is no longer necessary to go to a Social Security agency to apply for retirement. Now, taxpayers can apply for the benefit and monitor the progress of their request on the National Social Security Institute (INSS) website.

However, it is important to clarify that, before applying for retirement, you must check whether you meet the requirements for the intended modality, such as contribution time and minimum age.

The INSS itself offers a simulator, in which it is possible to calculate the necessary contribution time, and even the value of the benefit in each of the existing modalities.

INSS retirement: how to request benefits online

After defining the type of retirement, the first step to submitting the request is to access the website or the Meu INSS app (available for Android and iOS). After that, follow the following steps:

  • Access your gov.br account;
  • Click on the “New Order” option;
  • Go to “Retirements and CTC and Savings”;
  • Choose the type of retirement you want;
  • Enter the applicant's details;
  • Confirm retirement information;
  • Answer the questions and attach the required documents (this data will be used to analyze the right to the benefit);
  • Check if the mandatory fields have been answered;
  • Check the periods worked or contributed that are in the INSS system;
  • Read the statement and click “Confirm”.

When the process is completed, a retirement simulation based on the data entered will open. Next, you must indicate the INSS agency where you wish to maintain and receive the benefit, by indicating a zip code.

The location may be changed, depending on INSS rules. Finally, you must confirm the data and check the option “I declare that I have read and agree with the information above”. Ready!

How to track the order?

You can also follow the process without leaving home, using My INSS in the “Consultations and Requests” option. In the area, you can access all orders already made. See what the statuses mean:

  • Under Analysis: the INSS is analyzing your process;
  • Completed: your process has already been analyzed;
  • On Demand: the application needs more information or documents;
  • Canceled: your order has been cancelled.

Rules for retirement based on contribution time 2024

Workers who are about to retire need to pay attention to the requirements established by the Social Security reform that came into force in 2024. See the rules!

  • The current rule requires women to retire at a minimum age of 62, and with at least 15 years of contributions. For men, it is 65 years of age and 20 contributions.
  • However, for those who already contributed to the INSS before the reform was approved in November 2019, a transition regime was created that provides for changes every year, until 2031, in the rules for retirement.
  • The minimum age to apply for retirement increases by six months compared to the previous regime. Now in 2024, women must be at least 58 years and 6 months old. For men, the minimum age is now 63 years and 6 months.
  • The minimum contribution time is now 30 years for women and 35 for men.
  • The points rule, which adds contribution time to age, has also changed. The minimum score required is 91 for women and 101 points for men.

Transition rules

The transition rules are aimed at those who already contributed before the approval of the Pension Reform, and were created to establish a transition between the old and current benefit requirements. Each of them can change the moment in which the benefit will be granted and the amount that the worker will receive.

Contribution time + minimum age

The minimum retirement age is progressive and increases by six months annually. Furthermore, a minimum contribution time is required, 30 years for women and 35 for men.

Progressive age

202765 years60 years

202965 years61 years
203065 years61 and a half years old
203165 years62 years

Retirement by age

The rule considers a minimum age of 65 for men and 62 for women, and a contribution period of 15 years for both.

50% toll

It applies to policyholders who were about to retire in 2019, the rule establishes a toll equivalent to 50% of the remaining contribution time. For example: a worker who had already contributed for 33 years and who, before the Pension Reform, only had another 24 months of contributions outstanding, will have to work for another 12 months.

100% toll

The modality requires the worker to fully complete the outstanding contribution period before retiring. In this method, the advantage lies in the value of the benefit, which can be greater than the 50% toll.

Points rule

These are the points obtained from the sum of age and contribution time. In 2024, the minimum score will be 91 for women and 101 points for men. Just like the progressive age rule, the number of points increases each year.
