Huawei P50 Pro,
Huawei is struggling. Since the United States suspects the company of spying for the Chinese government, the phone maker can no longer use Google apps and services. The new P50 Pro also suffers a lot from this. The phone’s cameras are standouts, but when it comes to software, you’re constantly bumping into walls.
It has been two years since Huawei released a top phone in the Netherlands. In 2020, the company launched its Huawei P40 Pro.
There was little to criticize about that device in terms of hardware, but most popular apps were only available via detours because of the American ban. As a result, the user experience was insufficient.
The P50 Pro already appeared in China in 2021, but it took more than half a year before the phone came on the market in Europe. In terms of hardware, the device has already been overtaken by competitors. For example, the phone works with a Snapdragon 888 processor from last year.
The 4G version, that is. As a result, you cannot use the 5G network for faster internet, so the phone is immediately not very future-proof.
In terms of screen, the P50 Pro does move with the times. The 6.6-inch display is bright and supports a maximum refresh rate of 120 frames per second, so scrolling and gaming look very smooth.
A possible disadvantage is that the screen bends at the edges, so that some discoloration occurs there and your palm sometimes touches the screen.

Versatile cameras with a long range
The cameras are also convincing. There is a standard lens (50 megapixels) and a black and white camera (40 megapixels) that ensures that photos get more contrast.
In addition, there are a wide-angle lens (13 megapixels) and a telephoto lens (64 megapixels), with which you can zoom in up to 3.5 times without loss of quality.
You can zoom a hundred times with the lens in total, but then information in the picture is supplemented by software. The range is gigantic, but at such a distance the photos no longer look good.
Thanks to the macro mode, you can also take beautiful photos from very close up. And there is a great night mode that ensures that a dark environment is still well exposed in the picture.
In that respect, the camera system is one of the most complete systems on the phone market. The results are almost always convincing.
Software makes the phone less usable
It is therefore a pity that the rest of the use is so disappointing. Because Huawei does not have access to Google’s Play Store, the company relies on its own app store, the AppGallery.
Although Huawei has been promising for years that popular apps will be added to it, WhatsApp, Instagram, Netflix, YouTube and Google Maps are still missing.
The app store does offer links to other sites, so you can get installation files from there. But that is not convenient and makes updating apps more difficult. Also, the apps are not always complete or work less well than on other phones.
Huawei does offer some alternatives to make the use a little more bearable. For example, the company has its own browser, mail app and music service, but that is not ideal.
Incidentally, the phone also comes with quite a few pre-installed apps, such as Snapchat, search engine Bing and a number of Huawei apps. To use the app stores and various apps, you are practically forced to create a Huawei ID.

Conclusion
It is all not ideal and Huawei will also be disappointed. The app store is still not a success and the company only achieved half as much revenue from the sale of phones, tablets and wearables last year as in the year before.
Nevertheless, Huawei says it can “better deal with the uncertainties” caused by the US sanctions.
A shame, because a few years ago Huawei was considered a rising star in the smartphone field. Thanks to the hardware, the company always belonged to top brands, such as Samsung and LG.
Now Huawei is introducing a phone in the Netherlands with very flawed software that is secretly almost a year old and that for 1,200 euros. You don’t buy a phone for just the cameras, so all in all this is a device that we can’t recommend to anyone.
