Increase in serious cases of “Rhinovirus” in children and adolescents worries states

This Thursday (7), there was an increase in cases of Brazilians who had Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS), the cases are related to the rhinovirus affecting both children and adolescents.

This increase in cases was observed in some specific states, the states are: Bahia, Ceará, Rio de Janeiro and Maranhão. All increases were observed and published according to the InfoGripe bulletin that was released this Thursday by the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz).

Rhinovirus infections

Bahia State Health Department said that between October 20th and November 2nd, 31 cases of SARS caused by rhinovirus were registered, the age ranges of people who presented symptoms were from 0 to 19, but the highest incidences of cases occurred in children under 1 year of age.

In the State of Ceará, the ministry reported that from the month of January at the beginning of the year, until the month of October, 3,995 cases of people who ended up becoming infected with the rhinovirus were recorded. The Secretariat did not detail in how many cases people's health worsened, resulting in SARS.

In other states such as: Espirito Santo, Goiás, Amazonas and Amapá, there was also an increase in the number of people infected with rhinovirus, but no documents were presented proving the reason for these cases.

Other contagions

The cases of SARS caused by Covid – 19 have decreased in states in the central-southern region of Brazil, but in Rio de Janeiro there have been signs of an increase in cases, which in most cases affect more elderly people. In addition to all this, in other states there are occurrences of SARS, and a long-term trend, for all age groups in the states: Amazonas, Amapá, Bahia, Ceará, Espírito Santo, Goiás, Maranhão, Mato Grosso, Pernambuco, Piauí and Rio de Janeiro.

The bulletin also highlights a slight increase in the influenza B virus, which saw a slight increase in SARS cases associated with this infection detected across the country, although the total figure is not as significant.
