Jackie Chan and Ralph Macchio confirm new film “Karate Kid”

This Tuesday (21), Sony Pictures Entertainment confirmed the production of another film in the Karate Kid franchise, through a teaser on its official YouTube channel, and on its official social networks. The film will star Jackie Chan and Ralph Macchio, actors who have starred in different films in the franchise.

Sony is looking for the new Karate Kid

The video begins with Chan and Macchio announcing that they are working on a new production of the film, and Chan is very excited for the new film, and announces that they are looking for a global star to star as the Karate Kid, with no experience in performance. “The global search for the star of our new film begins now”, adds Macchio.

According to the producer, they are looking for “an actor of Chinese appearance or Chinese heritage who is between 15 and 17 years of age. He has to speak English fluently. Speaking Mandarin is strongly desired. He has to be smart and specialized in martial arts. Gymnastics material, dance and movements are a plus”.

At the end of the teaser, the website appears www.karatekidcasting.com for which interested parties must submit videos for audition by June 2024.

What is known about the new film

Ralph Macchio played Daniel LaRusso in the trilogy released in the 1980s, and in the series “Cobra Kai” – a continuation of the story –, while Jackie Chan played Mr. Han in the revamp that the film received in 2010.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the new film will be directed by Jonathan Entwistle, creator of the series “The End of the F***ing World” and “I'm Not Okay with This”Netflix original series.

The new Karate Kid is scheduled to be released in the United States on December 13, 2024.
