Fraser-Pryce runs second fastest time ever
Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce ran the second fastest time ever in the 100 metres at athletics competitions in the Jamaican capital Kingston on Saturday. The Jamaican world champion clocked a personal best of 10.63 seconds.
Only American Florence Griffith-Joyner has been faster than Fraser-Pryce in the past. She scored 10.49 in 1988 and that is still the world record 33 years later.
In the perennial rankings, Fraser-Pryce moved up from fourth to second place. The reigning world and two-time Olympic champion passed her compatriots Marion Jones (10.65) and Carmelita Jeter (10.64). (Fraser-Pryce runs second fastest time ever)
Fraser-Pryce did improve on saturday’s best season time. She dived nearly a tenth under 10.72 from up-and-coming American talent Sha’Carri Richardson.
The 34-year-old Fraser-Pryce is clearly aiming for a third Olympic 100m title in Tokyo next summer, following her gold medals at the Beijing Olympics in 2008 and London in 2012.
Dafne Schippers is also aiming for the Olympic title in the 100 meters, although she has a slight preference for the 200 meters. The Dutchman finished fifth in the 100 meters at the Rio de Janeiro Games and has a personal best of 10.81.
