Joy at Real Madrid after 35th league title,

The joy is great at Real Madrid, which saturday for the 35th time in the club history became champion of Spain. At ‘De Koninklijke’, however, people also realize that the season can become even more beautiful.

“It was a spectacular competition, in which we have been very consistent. I would like to thank all the players for their work, attitude and commitment. Now we can celebrate. That’s just as good for us mentally,” said coach Carlo Ancelotti after the 4-0 win over Espanyol.

“We have to enjoy this today and I want to thank everyone for their part. I also thank the chairman, who brought me to this club at a time when I was not expecting it.”

The championship gave Ancelotti a special record. The experienced Italian has now won the national title in all five top competitions (England, Germany, Spain, Italy and France).

“It fills me with pride and it means that I’m doing quite well,” laughed the Italian, who was also coach of Real between 2013 and 2015. “It’s the first time I’ve won a prize at a competition at the Bernabéu. The atmosphere is very special.”

Pérez pleads for Golden Ball win Benzema

President Florentino Pérez was also pleased with winning the national title. However, the Spaniard also pointed to next Wednesday, when Real hopes to reach the final of the Champions League at the expense of Manchester City.

“This is very satisfying. It is an award that has been earned and for which we have worked hard. Our goal was to become champion this season and win the Champions League. The first goal has now been achieved and hopefully we will win the Champions League as well.”

Pérez also had nice words for striker Karim Benzema, who has scored on the assembly line for Real this season and was also accurate in the championship game with Espanyol. It was his 42nd goal in his 42nd game this season, in all competitions.

“He was already good when he came here and he still is now,” said the chairman. “I don’t think anyone disputes that he should get the Golden Ball this year. They can no longer withhold it from him.”
