Justin Bieber has a paralyzed face – An eye that doesn’t blink and a corner of his mouth that hangs: Justin Bieber can only move his face halfway and has had to cancel some of his concerts. The singer is struggling with Ramsay-Hunt syndrome, he said last week.

What exactly is that and does it have anything to do with Bieber’s previous Lyme diagnosis?

Justin Bieber is quite a bad luck bird: the singer has already had glandular fever, struggled with Lyme disease and now he has to cancel at least part of his world tour because of Ramsay-Hunt syndrome.

On social media, he shared a video of himself explaining what’s going on, after angry and especially worried messages when he canceled his concerts.

And that made a lot immediately clear: it could be seen how half of his face simply did not function.

“I can’t smile with this side of my face and this nostril can’t move, so it’s a complete paralysis on this side of my face,” the singer said.

Performing is not an option and Bieber is going to take it easy to make sure that he fully recovers, because that is possible if you suffer from this syndrome.

Justin Bieber has a paralyzed face: what is Ramsay-Hunt syndrome?

Ramsay-Hunt syndrome is an infection of the auditory nerve and is caused by a virus. That virus is also responsible for chickenpox and shingles, for example. The paralysis of the face is one of the most obvious consequences, but also causes earache and temporary or permanent hearing loss.

It is therefore important that Bieber takes it easy: with earache, singing is not really an option anyway.

The good news is that the syndrome disappears on its own in most patients. With rest, possibly painkillers and movement therapy, the disease can be tackled. It can take a while, because in most patients the symptoms disappear after five to twelve months.

As mentioned, Bieber has been unlucky before. Thanks to Lyme disease and glandular fever, he was regularly in the infirmary. In 2020, he announced that he was struggling with the two diseases and suffered from them: his skin, his brain, his functioning and overall physical suffered from it, he said.

Glandular fever is caused by a virus and Lyme disease by the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi, which you contract after the bite of an infected tick. For Lyme disease and glandular fever, the singer says he received good treatment, but his body has suffered a serious blow.

After you’ve had chickenpox, the virus that causes Ramsay Hunt stays in your body and can flare up at times when your immune system is weaker. Fatigue can lead to that. Bieber has been working very hard lately on the preparations for his world tour and fatigue is lurking, says a doctor to VRT.

The singer himself is optimistic and thinks that it will be all right. But he will have to postpone that world tour for the time being. Get better first.
