K-Pop Stars We Are Bulletproof The Eternal – Opening the series of international festivals and concerts in Brazil in 2023, NCT 127 passed through here like a hurricane with the NEO CITY – THE LINK tour . One of the biggest current K-Pop groups, which debuted on SM Entertainment in 2016, gathered thousands of fans in three breathtaking concerts in São Paulo, in January, marking the history of the genre in Brazilian lands.

The nonet – formed by TAEIL , JOHNNY , TAEYONG , YUTA , DOYOUNG , JAEHYUN , JUNGWOO , MARK and HAECHAN (who missed the Latin American tour due to health reasons) – is known for its experimental lyrics and beats, powerful vocals and choreographies that leave anyone awestruck. There are more than 15 million followers on Instagram alone and almost 900 million views on the group’s channel.

Shortly before taking the stage for the second time in the country, the artists received us in a small room in the concert hall and greeted us again – since they had seen us in the corridor between the room and the dressing room minutes before, as well as at the press conference for press held two days before, as soon as they arrived in Brazil.

Attentive to each interview question for the cover of Quem , they revealed to us that the surprise of feeling the warmth and passion of the Brazilian public up close was much more than they could imagine. The night before, they defined the fans as the “noisiest” on the tour so far.

“I think everyone was expecting the Brazilian fans to have a lot of fun, but we were really surprised that they sang along to most of the songs, both in Korean and English! And we had a lot of fun performing. So if this is a good time to say thank you, we’d like to say, ‘Thanks for this,’” says the group, in English.

In addition to the concerts, they were also able to walk around the city a little bit in the midst of their intense schedule of commitments. “If we’re in Brazil, we’re going to try Brazilian food and go out to eat together. Taste the wine and coffee. We like to get to know the vibe of the city we are in”, explains JOHNNY.

In their free time, the group took the opportunity to go to a Brazilian steakhouse, have coffee at a famous coffee shop and also go shopping at designer stores in a mall in Vila Olímpia, in the south of São Paulo.

To alleviate the tiredness of the chaotic routine between flights and hotels, they make each other laugh by listing what they like to do to relax: “Go to the gym” (YUTA), “Watch Netflix” (JUNGWOO), “Sleep and go out eat together” (TAEYONG) and “Spend money!” (DOYOUNG).

With 30 songs in the setlist, including hits like Kick It , Lemonade , Cherry Bomb , Favorite and Love On The Floor , the show is full of pyrotechnics, confetti explosions and a lot of sensuality – like JOHNNY’s dance performance, that is to say without any defect, in a scenario with a shower. “We are doing our best. We’re really trying really hard. Look at our shoes, our pants, it’s all ripped [laughs],” admits TAEYONG.

COMEBACK
On the 30th, they released the repackage album Ay-Yo , with three new tracks, in addition to the hit 2 Baddies . Asked about the album’s production, MARK says it was his biggest challenge of the year.

“Actually, I had a really hard time with this [album]. We recorded it all last year and I felt like it was maybe the hardest song [a title, after which the album is named] for me to record all year. I think we hit new heights last year and I’m looking forward to seeing how our fans react to this release.”

“While we were preparing the dance, the choreographer in charge wanted to make sure we were on a new level. I think the fans can also get excited about the performance, because the choreography fits so well and the music gets even better with the dancing. I hope they get excited about it too,” adds JAEHYUN about the title (watch the clip below).

When talking about the new tracks on the album, JOHNNY gives a spoiler: “I like DJ, because it has a vibe similar to Touch. So, I believe it’s the most vibrant song on the album. Fans can look forward too, because we shot a mini-clip for her!”

WORLDWIDE PHENOMENON
For those who haven’t yet ventured into the infinite world of K-Pop, NCT 127 is part of NCT, whose name means Neo Culture Technology , currently with 23 members. Artists are divided into subgroups, which may or may not have fixed lineups ( want to know more about the group? “That complexity in itself makes us more intriguing, but I believe what makes us unique are the members. The members make the group feel special, because each one has their own special story, and their coming together creates an interesting chemistry. I feel our fans are attracted to that and the complexity, which makes it all the more interesting. And we still have so much more to show the world and our fans. And our music also makes us special!” says MARK.

NCT 127 is one of the most prominent third-generation K-Pop groups. They’ve grown exponentially over the past two years, even more so after the release of Kick It , which racks up nearly 170 million views on YouTube.

“Not bad at all,” laughs MARK. “I feel like our group matures a lot after finishing a tour. Now we are on our second [tour], visiting Brazil, and that increases our maturity. We feel it on stage and also off stage when we are preparing for a performance. We were able to realize how much not only us, but our music and our fans have also evolved and so we continue together”.

For JOHNNY, coming to Latin America is proof of how much they’ve achieved since debut. “I think the fact that we were able to come and play in Brazil, on the other side of the world, for three days, do six shows in Latin America, is an incredible way to measure where we’ve come. It is a very rewarding experience! We are already excited for when we return to Brazil”, explains the artist.

Prior to NCT 127’s debut, the members underwent years of training, taking classes such as dancing and singing. HAECHAN, the youngest among the nine, entered SM at just 13 years old. Asked if maturing was influenced by starting their careers so young, JOHNNY says that, for him, the sooner they start, the better.

“Everything has its good and bad sides”, evaluates MARK. “There are advantages and disadvantages, but definitely starting early gives you more experience, and I believe that [different] experiences are one of the most important things in life,” says JOHNNY.

“We started very early, so we ended up having experience with the bureaucratic parts or on stage. But at the same time, we’re still maturing and learning [about new things]. If we compare last year with this one, we’ve already changed a lot not only as a group, on tour, but also individually. I think we keep growing and it shows on stage. We are maturing every day,” explains JAEHYUN.

For the singer, the most challenging part of being an idol is the constant evaluation of his work – just like performing and auditioning during his trainee days . “It’s a job where you’re constantly being evaluated, all the time, every moment. And a nice part is that you get to see the results and feel a sense of accomplishment right away.”

“I feel like this is a job that, in a way, asks you to hide your emotions. Therefore, I believe that it is necessary to be patient in both a good and bad sense”, analyzes DOYOUNG.

Even with worldwide fame and visibility, the members reinforce that growth is something continuous and without limits. “We can say, ‘We did a good job,’ but we still want to be better performers , better artists, better presentations. So we’re just trying to grow like a skyscraper,” says JOHNNY.

“We’re always chasing something bigger, so I don’t think any of us are completely satisfied with where we are at the moment. There is no limit to learning,” says JUNGWOO. “Having the members around and having good people with us helps keep us humble,” adds MARK. “The reason is that we always think of the group first. He is very precious to us”, comments TAEYONG afterwards.

“We are eternal dreamers”, defines JAEHYUN. “I believe there are different answers for each of us. But for sure, as a group we still have ambitions, things we’d like to achieve, even though we’ve already achieved so much. We want to be on even bigger stages, break bigger records, meet more fans. There is always room for growth and we are always aiming to go as high as possible”, concludes MARK.

Before leaving the room, we leave a very Brazilian-style gift: a one-kilogram box of paçoquinhas, for the artists and the team that accompanies them. They are surprised (they chorus one: “Oh!”) and TAEYONG already goes ahead to take the treat in hand. He starts to open the plastic package before we even explain what the candy is made of. We didn’t get to see which of them tried the gift, but two days later, TAEYONG posted a photo of the half-full box.
