Kevin Feige Says Oscars Are Biased Against Marvel

In an interview with The Hollywood ReporterKevin Feige spoke about the chances of 'Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings' at the Oscars, and declared that the academy is prejudiced against Marvel films.

“I think we're always at a deficit because of the Marvel logo and because of a gender bias that certainly exists. I just loved that moment of brilliance with Black Panther that was overlooked and the work was recognized for the achievement that it was.”he said.

'Black Panther', as Kevin Feige recalled, was remembered at the Oscars, being the first superhero film to be nominated for the Oscar for Best Picture, and winning the statuettes in three categories: Best Costume Design, Best Production Design, and Best Original Score.

In 2009, 'Batman: The Dark Knight', a DC film, had already made history among superhero films by competing in 8 categories and winning two, Best Sound Editing and Best Supporting Actor, which ended up being a posthumous award for Heath Ledger.

Feiige continued, “There are a lot of comic book fans who didn't know who Shang-Chi was. But the work that Destin, Dave, Sue and Joel did created something new that connected with the audience.”and continued, “We recognize that, the audience recognizes that, and I would certainly love for this hard work of storytelling to be recognized.”he completed.

'Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings' is now available on Disney+, after ending its theatrical run, where it grossed $430 million worldwide, making it one of the highest-grossing films since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. A sequel to the film has already been confirmed by Marvel.

The Oscar nominees will only be announced on February 8, 2022. 'Shang-Chi' is expected to be nominated at least in technical categories, given that Best Picture is very competitive.
