Kiki Bertens in the second
Tennis player Kiki Bertens is stranded in the second round at the Madrid clay tournament. The seventh-placed defending champion was no match for the Russian Veronika Koedermetova, the number 28 in the world. Bertens failed to take advantage of her chances and lost after 1 hour and 20 minutes in two sets: 6-4 6-3.
Bertens played against Koedermetova once before. Last year, the 29-year-old Westland simply won against the Russian in the eighth finals at the Saint Petersburg tournament: 6-1 6-2. Bertens extended her title at that event at the time.
In the first set of the game in Madrid, Bertens managed to break Koedermetova’s service in the third game. However, the number 10 in the world ranking could not hold on to her lead. She gave up her serve in both the eighth game and the tenth game.
Bertens was also unable to take advantage of a quick break in the second set. She had to leave Koedermetova two services in a row, after which the 24-year-old Russian secured the win at her first match point.
Bertens had started the tournament in Madrid on Thursday with a victory against 15-year-old Victoria Jiménez Kasintseva from Andorra: 6-4 6-0. For the Dutch top player, that was her first victory on the WTA Tour this year. Bertens managed to win in the Billie Jean King Cup in Den Bosch two weeks ago. However, she only came into action on one of the two days because she suffered from an Achilles tendon injury.
Bertens won the tournament in Madrid in 2019. She defeated the Romanian leader Simona Halep in the final. Last year, the tournament in the capital of Spain was canceled due to the outbreak of the corona virus.
