The news was revealed by developer Iron Galaxy along with information regarding the migration, saying that “it has become more challenging to deal with issues that arise due to (Killer Instinct’s) reliance on the original servers”, with the change coming to improve the quality of life in the game .
The last time Killer Instinct received new content was in 2016. A definitive edition of everything that was released for the game arrived in 2017. Since then, nothing more has been said about the game.
The interesting thing is that instead of shutting down the servers, as is customary for titles that no longer have so many active players (peak of 39 users on Steam in the last 24 hours at the time this news was being published, according to SteamDB), Iron Galaxy opted to keep everything online, migrating its services, something that will happen over the next few months.
Iron Galaxy said that when running the game for the first time after updating to the first migration version, players will see longer loading times (40-60 seconds, or even minutes depending on their internet connection), and also the warning message “Refreshing DLC Timeout”. She encourages that if this message appears, the player should choose the “Wait” option while the game continues to sync.
