Lady Gaga's Bad Romance reaches 1 billion streams on Spotify, becoming the artist's fourth song to reach this milestone!

The smash hit “Bad Romance” has just reached the 1 billion stream mark on Spotify, becoming Lady Gaga's fourth song to surpass that mark. The single now joins “Poker Face,” “Shallow,” and “Always Remember Us This Way,” making Gaga the female artist with the most songs with over a billion streams on the platform in the last decade. The music video for “Bad Romance” on YouTube also reached the billion mark.

In its year of release, the single was included in the list of “Best Songs of 2009” by Rolling Stone and Pitchfork Media, in addition to having reached second place in the music charts in the United States, integrating the Billboard Hot 100 list. At the time, the music video generated several theories and controversies and was compared to “Thriller”, by Michael Jackson, due to the similarity in the choreography and the morbid theme, being thus elected the “Best Video of the 21st Century” by Billboard.

The clip

The song is about an unsuccessful love affair, while the video harshly criticizes the music industry and the hypersexualization of women in the pop universe in a playful way, portraying the stages a person goes through until they achieve autonomy within this system. In the video, the character played by Gaga is forced to drink and dance sensually in underwear in front of several men. At first she is reluctant, but when numbers appear increasing on a computer screen, she ends up giving in and performing a choreography with the dancers.

Then, an auction takes place where Gaga's character represents the main product to be sold, appearing in the middle of a circle formed by men, where she ends up being bought by one of them. Next, we see a more powerful Gaga, who appears wearing a fur coat to burn the bed where the man who bought her is waiting. In the last scene, Gaga appears lying next to the skeleton of the burned man, finally taking control over herself and her career, after having to submit to a series of situations.
