Lewandowski loses on return to Munich – Trainer Julian Nagelsmann is satisfied with the way in which Robert Lewandowski was made harmless by his former club Bayern Munich on Tuesday evening.

The Pole, who played for the Germans between 2014 and 2022, was unable to help FC Barcelona score a goal in the mutual Champions League match despite several chances.

“Robert played a good game, but of course I’m especially happy that he didn’t score a goal,” Bayern coach Nagelsmann said after his team’s 2-0 win. “In the first half you saw how dangerous he can be. We had better control after the break. We defended Robert well.”

The 34-year-old Lewandowski, who decided to exchange Bayern for FC Barcelona after 344 goals in 375 games last summer, could have crowned his return in the Allianz Arena with several goals.

In the eighteenth minute, the striker shot over from close range and shortly afterwards he headed on the fists of Manuel Neuer.

“I saw Robert shortly after the game and gave him a hug,” said Nagelsmann, who then declined to answer any more questions about Lewandowski. “I think I’ve already answered 65 questions about him this week. He’s playing for another club now. He’s not my player anymore and probably won’t be.”

Disappointed Xavi: ‘We were better than Bayern’

The missed opportunities of Lewandowski, among others, cost Barcelona dearly in Munich. With goals from Lucas Hernández and Leroy Sané, Bayern took a 2-0 lead at the start of the second half within four minutes. The Catalans never got over that deficit.

“I go home with a bad feeling,” said trainer Xavi. “Firstly because I don’t want to lose, but mainly because we didn’t deserve it. Last year Bayern were superior to us, but now we were better. I will watch the game again, but I really think we were better. “

“We dominated and created a lot of chances to score. If we had scored a goal it would have completely changed the course of the game. But this is the Champions League.
