Liver Cancer: Symptoms, Treatment and Survival Rates

Liver cancer is a serious disease characterized by the uncontrolled growth of cells in the liver. The most common form of liver cancer is hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), which originates in hepatocytes, the main cell type in the liver. Early treatment is crucial to improve survival.

Unfortunately, liver cancer is often only discovered at a later stage, because the patient usually experiences few or no symptoms in the early stages. As the disease progresses, symptoms can include:
  • Jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes)
  • Abdominal pain or swelling
  • Loss of appetite and weight
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • General fatigue and weakness

Risk factors

The main risk factors for liver cancer are:
  • Chronic hepatitis B or C infection: These viral infections can severely damage the liver and lead to cancer.
  • Chronic liver disease: Long-term liver disease can cause inflammation and mutations in the liver that can lead to cancer.
  • Heavy alcohol use: Alcohol abuse can cause cirrhosis, a scarring of the liver, which in turn increases the risk of liver cancer.
Metabolic syndromes such as obesity and type 2 diabetes are also linked to a higher risk of liver cancer.

Treatment

Treatment options depend on the stage and type of liver cancer, and the patient’s overall health. They usually involve a combination of treatments, including:
  • Surgery to remove the tumor or part of the liver
  • Liver transplantation
  • Radiation and chemotherapy to kill the cancer cells
  • Targeted drug treatment to block the growth of cancer

Prevent liver cancer

Preventing liver cancer mainly consists of reducing the risk factors associated with it. Some preventive measures are:

  • Hepatitis B vaccination: This vaccine can significantly reduce the risk of liver cancer associated with hepatitis B infections.
  • Regular medical check-ups for people with chronic liver diseases to detect any abnormalities at an early stage.
  • Lifestyle changes such as reducing alcohol consumption, maintaining a healthy weight and exercising regularly.

Survival rates for liver cancer

In Belgium, liver cancer is a rare disease that occurs more often in men than in women, with an average age at diagnosis of 66 years in men and 68 years in women. In 2008, liver cancer was the tenth most common cause of cancer death in men and the eighth in women. More than half of patients die within the first year. Only one in five patients is still alive five years after diagnosis.
