Another list from Lorena dedicated exclusively to such a special holiday: Christmas. And this time with some very different films, with a bit of horror, we have a very diverse list with classic Christmas “horror” films, which many watched at the end of the year. Today, these films have become Christmas classics and bring a little bit of fear for the kids. Sure, most of these movies aren't really horror movies, but they made the kids' Christmas morning a little bit scarier.

Gremlins – 1983

The cute and dangerous Gremlins, who returned to cheer up children in the 2000s, start this list as an 80s classic. The little pests manage to ruin Christmas Eve after their owners fail to follow important rules for their care. Full of many disasters, you follow a city turned upside down as people try to deal with the “army” of Gremlins.
Official synopsis: “With its Christmas lights and dusting of snow, Kingston Falls is an idyllic little town—until the gremlins take over. A father returns from Chinatown with an unusual pet, a Mogwai—a gift for his son. The rules are simple: keep your Mogwai away from water, away from bright lights, and most importantly, never—ever—feed it after midnight. But rules are inadvertently broken, and the consequences multiply at an alarming rate.”
Edward Scissorhands – 1990

A classic from the 90s that couldn't be missed is Edward Scissorhands, But this is not a film about Christmas. However, the final part of the film takes place exclusively on this holiday. In addition, at the beginning of the film, the “story” of the appearance of snow is told, which for us Brazilians is not so significant, but many countries celebrate this holiday with the city covered in snow. Above all, this is a Tim Burton classic that should be enjoyed at the end of the year.
Official synopsis: “When a mad scientist meets an untimely death, his creation is left to be cared for by Scissorhands. Peg Boggs visits an old castle down the street. There she finds Edward Scissorhands, created by a deceased inventor. She helps him, and he becomes beloved by some and persecuted by others. Cast: Johnny Depp, Winona Ryder, Dianne Wiest, Anthony Michael Hall, Kathy Baker, Vincent Price, Alan Arkin.
The Nightmare Before Christmas – 1993

Another one from Tim Burton's unique list of films. We now have an animation that is very reminiscent of “Corpse Bride” in its style. Of course, Jack is older. Above all, both have Burton's trademark. This classic joins the list of horror classics. The skeleton king ventures into the Christmas world and, therefore, this film becomes essential for the holiday. The film above can be found on Disney's streaming service.
Official synopsis: “Bored with the same old routine of screaming and scaring, Pumpkin King Jack Skeleton wants to spread some Christmas cheer. But his merry mission threatens Santa Claus and creates a nightmare. for the boys and good girls from everywhere.”
The Grinch – 2000 and 2018

The Grinch was one of the most popular Christmas movies during this period and gave children nightmares, since the character's entire appearance is scary. But Jim Carey still manages to bring a certain grace to the grumpy “monster” from the 2000 film. However, to the delight of fans of this classic, Universal, together with Illumination, brought an animated version of the film in 2018, very similar to the film “Hourton Hears a Who?. Both films are based on the book “How the Grinch Stole Christmas!”by author Dr. Seuss.
Official synopsis: “Discover the magic of the Grinch this holiday season! Academy Award®-winning director Ron Howard and Academy Award®-winning producer Brian Grazer bring Christmas’s most beloved grump to life with the irrepressible Jim Carrey as The Grinch. Why is the Grinch (Carrey) so grumpy? No one seems to know, until little Cindy Lou Who (Taylor Momsen) takes matters into her own hands and turns the world of Whoville and the Grinch upside down…and funny in her search for the true meaning of Christmas.”
Krampus: The Christmas Horror – 2015

Finally, we have the scariest film of all. Krampus is a relatively new film compared to the previous ones, so it is not really a classic, but the inspiration for the work is quite old. Since it is a horror film, it is not recommended for children to watch, so this “classic” is only for adults.
Official synopsis: “When his dysfunctional family clashes during the holidays, young Max (Emjay Anthony) becomes disillusioned and turns his back on Christmas. Little does he know, this lack of festive spirit has unleashed the wrath of Krampus: a demonic force with an ancient evil intent on punishing non-believers. All hell breaks loose when the beloved holiday icons take on a monstrous life of their own, laying siege to the fractured family home and forcing them to fight for one another if they are to survive.
Lorena's list ends here…
Unfortunately, the list is coming to an end, but you can expect more Christmas classics in the coming weeks of this month. In addition, we will bring many specials focused on this end of the year to provide a hopeful and memorable end to 2020. The films chosen above were mainly focused on bringing back this memory of “Christmas horror” that many children of the 2000s had. Even though the last film is recent, all the horror involving Krampus is still present in the lives of many adults to this day. So, take advantage of the holidays to celebrate with the childhood classics that are so missed this year.
