Mattel reveals ambitious plans for Hollywood with 14 films in development

In an interview with Varietythe CEO from the MattelYnon Kreiz, and the Oscar-nominated producer of “Dallas Buyers Club” and current director of Mattel FilmsRobbie Brenner, revealed that the iconic toy company is about to make a comeback Hollywood. No less than 14 Mattel properties are in development, some already with big stars confirmed in their casts. Let's check out what they are:

“Barney”

Producer: Daniel Kaluuya (“Run!”)
Reciting the famous “Barney” song (“I love you, you love me, we are a happy family“), the Mattel executive said the next film will be about “identity and finding who you love and who feels excludedthe ” and “What does it all mean?” Brenner added that the film will address “more adult themes and will be a little different“.

“Polly Pocket”

Studio: MGM
Star: Lily Collins (“Emily in Paris”)
Writer/Director: Lena Dunham (“girls” from HBO)
“Emily In Paris” star Lily Collins will play the micro-doll in a family comedy written and directed by the “Girls” creator. Brenner confirmed that there is a script, enthusiastically describing it as “excellent“. The question remains whether Barbie and her great “rival” will meet at some point.

“Hot Wheels”

Studio: Warner Bros..
Producer: JJ Abrams (“Lost“)
The world's best-selling toy will come to life in a film featuring cars, monster trucks and motorcycles. Abrams described the adaptation as “realistic and rough“. Brenner explained that this means the film will have “real characters that you can relate to, that are three-dimensional, that have emotional journeys“.

“Rock 'Em Sock 'Em Robots”

Star: Vin Diesel (“Fast & Furious”)

“Fast & Furious” star Vin Diesel will lead a film based on Mattel's tabletop fighting robot game.

“Major Matt Mason”

Star: Tom Hanks (“Forrest Gump – The Storyteller”)
Screenwriters: Akiva Goldsman (“The Da Vinci Code”), Michael Chabon (“Spider-Man 2”)
Tom Hanks, the breakout star behind iconic films like “Forrest Gump,” “Cast Away” and “The Terminal,” will star as Mattel's 1960s astronaut action figure who lives and works on the moon .

“ONE”

In addition to these, other films are already planned by Mattel Films: “Wishbone“, through Universal Studios and produced by Peter Farrelly (“Green Book”). “Matchbox“, made by the studio Skydance and written by David Coggeshall (“Orphan 2: Inception”). “Thomas and Friends”, directed by Marc Forster (“World War Z” and “Finding Neverland”). “A Christmas Balloon”, written by Gabriela Revilla Lugo (“Palm Springs” and “Gully“) and produced by Chris Lemos. And, finally, a film about the pair of glasses “ViewMaster“, there are still no further details about the names involved. It is noted that different studios will be responsible for the various Mattel Films films, so there is no guarantee that all these characters will meet at some point in a large shared universe; only we have to stay cheering for a while crossover between Barbie and Polly.

It is worth noting that, after the success of “Barbie”, a sequel to the film is also in Mattel's plans, as the film has already grossed around US$380 million in just one week of showing. However, neither the sequel to “Barbie” nor the other films on Mattel's schedule have a release date due to a joint strike by the screenwriters' union (WGA) and actors (SAG-AFTRA) should prevent any project from starting recording soon.
