Matthieu Blazy takes over creative direction at Chanel in 2025

Matthieu Blazy was already being considered by different media outlets specializing in the fashion world to take on the creative direction of Chanel, and now the official announcement has finally been made, “I am very happy and honored to join the wonderful Chanel. I’m looking forward to meeting the entire team and writing this new chapter,” said the designer in an official statement.

Virginie Viard left Chanel's creative direction in June this year and since then the brand has been looking for a successor to take on the role. The French brand's latest collection was not designed by any main designer, but was created by the brand's fashion team. The expectation is that with Matthieu's arrival an approach will emerge combining respect for tradition with an innovative vision, as was the case with his arrival at Bottega Veneta.

History

Blazy was born in 1984, his career as a designer began with Raf Simons, at the time he worked in the menswear area of ​​the eponymous brand. His first experience shaped his current style, and to this day it is possible to see references to this work in his current creations. Then, Matthieu moved to Maison Margiela.

It was then at Margiela that Blazy stood out in the market, mixing haute couture with disruption, Matthieu conquered the industry. His most notable work for the brand was the crystal masks, which were used by rapper Kanye West on his tours.

In 2014, the designer became senior in his role. He worked under the direction of Phoebe Philo, at the Celine studio, Phoebe is considered another great character in the fashion world. Philco also had an influence on Blazy's current drawing style, bringing a more sophisticated and minimalist aesthetic.

Between 2016 and 2019, Blazy worked again with Raf Simons, as part of the Calvin Klein team, as design director for the men's and women's collections. Soon after, he was appointed creative director of Bottega Veneta, where he remains today. The brand's work was critically acclaimed, consolidating itself as one of the main and most talented names of its generation. Matthieu stands out for his creativity and ability to create new yet sophisticated things.
