Mercury thermometers and pressure gauges are prohibited by ANVISA
– how to remain healthy, health related news, latest symptoms and treatments.
ANVISA (National Health Surveillance Agency), decided through a resolution published in the Official Gazette of the Union this Tuesday (24), to prohibit throughout the national territory the use, import and sale of thermometers and sphygmomanometers (blood pressure gauges) that contain mercury in their composition.
The decision was made in the Minamata Convention in Japan in 2013, and Brazil is a party to this manifesto and was approved by ANVISA in 2022. The intention of the decision is to reduce mercury consumption in order to preserve the environment. The ban on its use does not apply to research or use in calibration instruments.

ANVISA emphasizes that digital thermometers and sphygmomanometers are health products widely used in Brazil and have the same clinical indications as those containing mercury. They are an alternative since their accuracy is also compulsorily assessed by the Brazilian Conformity Assessment System and are environmentally more sustainable.
Mercury and its harmful effects
Mercury is a natural metal on Earth and can be found in its liquid or solid state. Its chemical composition is the biggest challenge for the environment, as it is a high pollutant if improperly absorbed by animals and living beings and in cases of irregular disposal, it can lead to environmental degradation and harm to health.
“According to Fostier, contamination of a river or lake by mercury can lead to the death of several organisms. This is because, once the metal comes into contact with aquatic environments, it is metabolized by certain microorganisms, such as some bacteria, which combine the element with carbon to form methylmercury, the organic form of the metal.”
Requirements to qualify
In order to comply with the disposal requirements for these models of thermometers and sphygmomanometers, it is necessary to follow the Good Practices for the Management of Healthcare Waste, established by Anvisa in 2018, which states that in the event of accidental breakage, for example. If there is non-compliance with the resolution, ANVISA will issue a notice as a health infraction, without prejudice to the applicable civil, administrative and criminal liabilities.
