Meryl Streep Reveals Her Harrowing Experience in The Devil Wears Prada

Three-time Oscar winner Meryl Streep reunited with her castmates from The Devil Wears Prada to talk about the film on the 15th anniversary of its production. In it, the actress played editor-in-chief Mirando Priestley, who, despite not having won an Oscar, is still a hit with audiences today as a character everyone loves to hate. During the interview for Entertainment WeeklyMeryl said that she decided to act according to the Stanislavski Method, where the actor or actress stays in character even when not on stage, and that is why she felt extremely discouraged on set.

“It was horrible! I was miserable in my trailer. I could hear everyone laughing and having fun,” she says. “Well, that's the price you pay for being the boss! That was the last time I tried the Method thing.”

Streep's co-stars Emily Blunt and Anne Hathaway echo Streep's experience during filming. Blunt says that Meryl is very fun and sociable and that it must not have been fun for her to isolate herself, while Hathaway says that she did feel intimidated, but that she knew that “anything she was doing to make me feel scared, I would appreciate it because I also knew that she was there looking out for me.” Hathaway also shares how, when she felt pressured in a scene, the way Meryl's performance affected her performance for the better, helping her break through the barrier that was holding her back.

The movie The Devil Wears Prada was based on the book of the same title released in 2003. In it, Andy (Anne Hathaway) is a young, recent graduate and dreamer who goes to work at the renowned fashion magazine Runway as an assistant to the severe and scary editor-in-chief Mirando Priestley (Meryl Streep). The work begins to drain Andy emotionally and the girl questions her career choices.

The film was a worldwide success, grossing $326 million on a budget of $35 million. Directed by David Frankel, the film also stars Stanley Tucci, Gisele Bündchen, Tracie Thoms, and others.
