Three years after disabling the facial recognition system on Facebook, due to pressure from regulators and privacy concerns, the social media giant announced that it is testing the service again. This time, as part of a strategy to combat “celebrity baits”, scams that use images of celebrities to give credibility to false advertisements.
Meta will include around 50,000 public figures in a test that consists of automatically comparing their Facebook profile photos with images used in suspicious advertisements. If they match and the company considers the ad to be fraudulent, it will be blocked. These celebrities will be informed of their inclusion in the program and will be able to choose not to participate.
The test will be launched worldwide starting in December, with the exception of some jurisdictions where Meta does not have regulatory authorization, such as the United Kingdom, the European Union, South Korea and the US states of Texas and Illinois.
Meta is prioritizing public figures who have already had their images used in fraudulent advertisements, explains the company's vice president of content policies, Monika Bickert.
“The idea is to offer as much protection as possible. They can choose not to participate if they wish, but we want this protection to be available in a simple and effective way”, explains Bickert.
The test shows that the company is seeking to balance the use of a potentially invasive technology with growing concerns from regulators about the rise in the number of scams, while also trying to minimize criticism over its history of using user data – a problem that has plagued social media for years.
When Meta deactivated the system in 2021, deleting the facial data of a billion users, the justification was the increase in “social concerns”. In August of this year, the company was ordered to pay US$1.4 billion to the state of Texas to settle a lawsuit that accused it of illegally collecting biometric data.
At the same time, Meta is being sued for not doing enough to stop so-called “celebrity baits”, which often use images generated by artificial intelligence to trick users into investing in fraudulent schemes.
With the new test, the company guarantees that all facial data generated by comparisons with suspicious ads will be deleted immediately, whether the scam has been confirmed or not.
The tool went through a “rigorous internal privacy and risk review process” and was also discussed with regulators, politicians and experts, Bickert adds.
Additionally, the company plans to test the use of facial recognition data to help regular Facebook and Instagram users regain access to accounts that have been hacked or locked out due to forgotten passwords.
