Mexico metro disaster
MEXICO CITY – The death toll from a metro accident in Mexico City rose to 25 on Wednesday. The head of the civil defense agency in Mexico’s capital said at a news conference that 38 people are still in hospital and that about three quarters will be fired soon.
The Norwegian investigation agency DNV, which arrived in Mexico on Tuesday, is investigating the accident. The trainset fell several meters on Monday when a bridge collapsed when passing.
Metro line 12 has a history with concerns about the architectural condition. According to the leader of the city council Claudia Sheinbaum, the line was therefore the only line of the network that was inspected daily.
According to Mexican media, the local population has long been concerned about the safety of the building. There have also been allegations of corruption in the construction of the metro line. Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard, who led Mexico City when the viaduct was being built, has pledged to cooperate with the investigation.
