Microsoft bows to European pressure and adapts cloud services for competition – Microsoft is making its own cloud services more accessible to European cloud companies after a complaint was filed against the company in March for abuse of power.
With the new policy, Microsoft wants to avoid becoming the subject of an in-depth European investigation in the field of competition.
The new policy makes it easier for European cloud companies to sell and host Microsoft products such as Windows and Office 365, writes CEO Brad Smith Wednesday in a blog post. Customers can also purchase licenses for programs in the future, without having to purchase hardware.
Recently, the French cloud company OVH, together with two European industry peers, filed a complaint against Microsoft with the European Commission.
According to the complaint, competitors are disadvantaged by Microsoft’s software license terms and it is easier and cheaper to link products such as Windows, Office and Windows Server to Microsoft’s own cloud service Azure.
“Not all of them are true, but some of these claims are true,” Smith said wednesday at a rally in Brussels. “We have a responsibility to do more and we want to act quickly.
We thought too much about the big competitors and forgot to think about the smaller players in the European market.”
Microsoft is the second largest provider of cloud services in the world. Amazon is the largest provider of such services. Google, owned by Alphabet, is hot on Microsoft’s heels.
