Miley Cyrus reaches 800 million plays on “Wrecking Ball” on Spotify

Last Tuesday (19), Miley Cyrus' song “Wrecking Ball” surpassed 800 million plays on Spotify. The historic mark places the song as the 5th most played among the singer's songs on Spotify, behind only “Flowers”, “Party in The USA”, “We Can't Stop” and “Nothing Breaks Like a Heart”.

Historical hit

“Wrecking Ball” was released in 2013 and was part of the album “Bangerz”, a work that changed the singer’s career once and for all. The hit was received with surprise by the public, as it was the definitive break from her “Disney” style, which was what made her famous. However, “Wrecking Ball” ended up becoming one of her biggest hits and making the singer even better known.

The song spent three weeks topping the Billboard Top 100, the ranking most prestigious musical in the United States. This period at the top was once again equaled by Miley with the song “Flowers”, which today is the singer's biggest hit with more than 1 billion and 400 million plays on Spotify.

Controversial clip

Not only did Miley Cyrus' musical style change with the release of “Wrecking Ball,” but so did her identity as an artist and public figure. Proof of this is the official music video for the song, which at the time had intense repercussions. The aesthetics of the clip completely break the image that the public had of the singer, who previously still fit the Disney artist “profile”. Check it out:

Today, the clip already has more than 1 billion views on YouTube. Miley Cyrus has even said that she regrets making the video. In an interview with the American radio program “Zach Sang Show”, in 2017, Miley said that she would delete the song from her career: “That's something you can't erase. I'll always be the naked girl on a wrecking ball“, he lamented.

The fact is that, to this day, the song continues to be played and is considered an “anthem” by the singer’s fans.
