Nadal also skips ATP tournament in Barcelona

It remains unclear for the time being when Rafael Nadal will return to competition. The Spaniard, who is recovering from a stress fracture to his ribs, opted out on Tuesday for the ATP tournament in Barcelona that starts on April 17.

The 35-year-old Nadal suffered the rib injury last month during the Masters tournament in Indian Wells. The 21-time Grand Slam winner is already not participating in the Masters tournament on clay in Monte Carlo this week and his team also removed him from the list of participants for the tournament in Barcelona on Tuesday.

“We don’t know yet when he will be able to play his first tournament on clay again. Hopefully soon,” Nadal’s team wrote in a statement to Reuters news agency on Tuesday. (Nadal also skips ATP tournament in Barcelona, comeback not yet in sight)

Partly due to his rib injury, Nadal went down in the final of the Masters tournament of Indian Wells at the end of March. The number three in the world suffered against the American Taylor Fritz his first defeat of 2022: 6-3 and 7-6.

During the match, Nadal looked anything but fit and in the run-up to the final he already complained about problems with his chest and ribs. Tests in Barcelona eventually revealed a stress fracture.

Nadal has had an excellent season so far, culminating in his title at the Australian Open. He also won this year’s ATP tournaments in Acapulco and Melbourne. In May, Nadal hopes to peak again at Roland Garros, the Grand Slam tournament that he has already won thirteen times.
