Netherlands vs Norway

The Dutch women made an impression on Tuesday in preparation for the Tokyo Olympics. The team of national coach Sarina Wiegman won 7-0 against Norway in Enschede.

At half-time it was only 2-0 for the Dutch women thanks to goals from Vivianne Miedema and Sherida Spitse, who scored beautifully from a free kick. After the break Jill Roord, Dominique Janssen, again Miedema, Shanice van de Sanden and Daniëlle van de Donk lifted the score to 7-0.

The resounding victory over the number twelve in the world rankings is a big boost for national coach Wiegman towards the Olympic Games. Last Thursday, the Netherlands lost 1-0 to Italy, although Miedema and Lieke Martens did not participate.

Wiegman will announce the 18 names from her Olympic squad on Wednesday. Seven more players have yet to lose weight in the last 2016. Four of them are designated as reserves and travel with them to Tokyo.

At the game in the Grolsch Veste, 7,500 spectators were welcome. It was the first time since the Netherlands-Slovenia on 12 November 2019 that fans were in the stands at an international of the Dutch women on Dutch territory.

After 13 minutes already 1-0 (Netherlands vs Norway)

With the returned Martens and Miedema, the Dutch women started the game excellently in Enschede. After 13 minutes of play, it was 1-0. Miedema found the far corner and left Norwegian goalkeeper Cecilie Fiskerstrand without a chance.

Miedema’s opening goal proved to be the start of a goal celebration in the Grolsch Veste. After more than half an hour Spitse doubled the score with a beautifully taken free-kick from more than 25 yards out.

After half-time, the goals fell all the way like ripe apples. Within seven minutes, the Netherlands went from 2-0 to 5-0 from the 51st minute, through goals from Roord, Janssen and Miedema.

Despite changes by Stefanie van der Gragt and Miedema, the Dutch women did not take the foot off the accelerator, as they scored twice more in the last twenty minutes. Substitute Van de Sanden pinned the ball beautifully over the Norwegian goalkeeper, after which a lot of emotion was unleashed on the striker. With a beautiful long-range shot, Van de Donk completed the seven-pointer for the Netherlands in the 84th minute.
