Nintendo sells considerably fewer game consoles due to persistent shortage of chips

Nintendo sells – Nintendo has sold 6.68 million Switch consoles in the past six months. This is nearly 20 percent less than in the same period last year. The game console manufacturer suffers a lot from the chip shortage, says the company in the presentation of its quarterly figures.

With the holidays just around the corner, Nintendo is trying to do everything it can to sell as many game consoles as possible in the coming weeks. That alone will not make up for this year’s disappointing sales figures; Nintendo lowers its full-year sales forecast by 10 percent to nineteen million units.

Worldwide, many companies are suffering from the shortage of chips. Nintendo says that it can make fewer game consoles as a result.

Nintendo sells considerably fewer game consoles

There are now three versions of the Nintendo Switch available. The latest version with an OLED screen was sold more than 3.5 million times in the first half of 2022. The normal version of the Switch went over the counter 2.2 million times and the Switch Lite 920,000 times.

In terms of game sales, the game console manufacturer did a lot better. Nintendo sold more than 95.4 million games in the past six months, 1.5 million more than in the same period last year.

Splatoon 3was very popular last year. That Nintendo game was sold more than 7.9 million times. Nintendo Switch SportsandMario Kart 8 Deluxesold 6.2 and 3.1 million copies, respectively.

Operating profit slightly better than expected

Nintendo saw its operating profit rise to 118.7 billion yen (809 million euros) last quarter. In the same period last year, it was 100.2 billion yen. The full-year operating profit forecast remains unchanged at 500 billion yen.

The game console manufacturer, which is based in Kyoto, has raised its expectation for net profit for this financial year to 400 billion yen. Nintendo benefits from the weaker yen, but also from the growth in the number of games sold.

The value of the Japanese yen is at its lowest level against the US dollar in more than thirty years. That’s advantageous for Nintendo. The company gets 80 percent of its sales outside of Japan. The depreciation of the yen makes the company’s products cheaper outside of Japan.
