Olcay Gulsen receives personal messages from women in abusive relationships

Olcay Gulsen is national ambassador of UN Women and will now also work as an entrepreneur against violence against women. The presenter is closely involved in the subject and regularly receives personal messages from victims of violence in relationships. She tries to convince the victims that things can be done differently.

A year and a half ago, Gulsen made Olcay & domestic violencefor Net5, in which she talked to victims and perpetrators. In the program, she also spoke candidly about her own experiences: in her youth, her mother was beaten by her father. Since then, the subject has not let go of her and she is actively working to create more awareness.

Gulsen receives messages on social media from women who are in the same situation as her mother. The 41-year-old presenter tries to help those women where she can. “I talk to them and encourage them to break the cycle. Many women have been abused for years before they dare to report it.” (Olcay Gulsen receives personal messages from women in abusive relationships)

The presenter knows from her own experience that it can help if someone says that things should and can be done differently. “So I try to make that clear in those conversations. I feel a huge pride every time they let me know that they have filed a report, or realize: this is the last time I wake up in this situation.”

“My mother told me, and that really broke my heart, that she always thought this was part of being a woman. Because it had happened to her mother too. If you don’t know any better, you don’t do anything about it, because you think this is just life.

Awareness is so important that everyone realizes: I can also help. Because sometimes you have to hear from someone you don’t know well, a complete stranger or a neighbor, that things can be done differently. That’s when it really gets through.”

‘I really want to do something, not just talk about it’

The contrast is great: in addition to the personal stories in her inbox, she also receives many questions about what makeup she wears and where her clothes come from.

It gave Gulsen an idea. “I also really want to do something for women in dangerous situations, not just talk about it. (Olcay Gulsen receives personal messages from women in abusive relationships)

That is why we donate the entire turnover of #Olcay Gulsen Beauty of 23 and 24 November to the UN (United Nations, ed.). With every euro that women spend they help another woman, I thought that was a nice idea. And maybe we will raise a few tens of thousands of euros, which is of course not nearly enough, but that will help women again.”

The money goes, among other things, to so-called One Stop centers, where victims of violence can go for shelter, medical and psychological help and where they can start trajectories to build their lives independently of the perpetrator.

#Gulsen wants to give the donors concrete feedback on what happened to their money.

“I think it’s very important that it’s not an endless pit, that you see where it can lead. Women are really helped and see: there is also a life after the violence.”

Gulsen plans to do much more for the subject that is so dear to her heart. For example, on Sunday 28 November, UN Women is organising a demonstration in westerpark, provided that the corona rules allow it, to draw attention to the campaign against violence against women.

In addition, she visits a shelter around the corner with professional make-up artists to start a conversation with the women who live there and give them a makeover. Of course, only if the corona restrictions allow it. “Many women have completely lost their self-confidence, they deserve to find it again.”

For the KRO-NCRV, Gulsen is going to work on a series about femicide (murder of a woman due to the fact that she is a woman) and partner violence, in order to be able to offer even more stories a stage. She wants her own story to be less discussed this time. (Olcay Gulsen receives personal messages from women in abusive relationships)

“I treated that a year and a half ago and that was very nice and beautiful. But now I don’t want it to be about me anymore, I want to listen to it from a distance and talk to those people.

Partly because of Olcay & domestic violence, I can now do that better. I think it can help a lot of people to talk about what happened to them.”
