Penalty shootout rules update causes discontent among goalkeepers in the country
No longer able to provoke and try to disperse the attention of the player who takes the penalty kick, the update of the rule in penalty shootouts has generated discontent among Brazilian goalkeepers. As established by the new text of the International Football Association Board (IFAB), FIFA’s body responsible for regulating the laws on the field of play, the goalkeeper can no longer “behave in a way that unfairly distracts” the kicker.
In an interview with geSão Paulo goalkeeper, Rafael Monteiro, pointed out that the rule update harms those who defend the net and fails to establish norms for the batsmen, who can go slowly and even stop.
“It’s a mind game there. I think it really has to be within a limit, it cannot slow down the game, but I also think that we cannot remain silent in a situation of just standing still“, he said. “I think this provocation, this mental game, is worth it. It’s from the game, it’s from the sport, I thought this new rule was very heavy, because it ends up limiting the actions of goalkeepers a lot”.

Another goalkeeper who also opposed the new text was Éverson Pires, who plays for Atlético-MG.
“The penalty is a decisive moment for the striker, he is eager to score. Each one uses his trick, this mental game in the penalty. We just get a little hurt, I think I can use that word here, because the goalkeeper cannot talk to the striker”, he stated to ge. “When the striker scores a goal, he can provoke the goalkeeper”.
Since the rule came into effect, on April 11, the advantage of Serie A scouts in penalties has increased: while the players managed only 75.8% of success in 2022, their effectiveness reached 88.2% in the last month alone , in which 34 penalties were taken.
