On Tuesday (23), during a House Homeland Security hearing, more details were revealed about the attack on Donald Trump, which took place on Saturday (13).
According to Christopher Paris, Commissioner of the Pennsylvania State Police, investigators believe the shooter fired eight rounds before being killed by snipers.
“I believe the number is eight. Eight capsules were recovered,” explains Paris.
Paris' statement came shortly after Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle declined to speak about the attack or answer questions from the House Oversight Committee.
Paris gave a much more detailed account of the time the shooter was first spotted to when the young man began shooting at the former president. The commissioner recounted the communication between local police officers who saw the alleged shooter, Thomas Matthew Crooks, and the Secret Service.
He explains that “there was a chain of messages” with members of the Butler County Emergency Services Unit.
“At some point, when he used the rangefinder, suspicion grew.”Paris explains. He adds that the Emergency Services Unit (ESU) received a message about Crooks' movement and passed it on to the Secret Service.
According to Paris, two officers present on the day of the attack left their posts to search for the suspect they initially spotted, and even alerted other authorities.
The post of these two ESU officers was in the building overlooking the roof where Crooks took aim at Trump and fired the shots.
Republican Rep. Dan Bishop of North Carolina asked Paris whether they would have been able to see Crooks from the police station if they had not gone out to look for him. He said he did not know.

Paris also says that one of the local police officers stood facing Crooks on the roof for a few minutes before the suspect actually shot Trump.
He explains that as soon as the officers learned that Crooks was on the roof about to shoot, they went to confront him. However, while one of the officers was “hanging” on the roof, the shooter pointed the shotgun at him, and he fell.
The commissioner says that Crooks was on the roof for about 3 minutes, but it only took a few seconds between the moment the police arrived at him and the moment the shots were fired.
