Is sugar unhealthy? How do you know if you have diabetes? Can you cure diabetes? And what is the difference between slow and fast sugars? In this episode of the podcast series “What’s on your mind?” GP Tim De Boeck and his friend Jens Boons will delve deeper into all your questions about sugar and diabetes.

Diabetes; one in ten Flemish people have to deal with it. Yet the condition often remains under the radar. One in three would not even know that they have it. Diabetes can nevertheless have far-reaching consequences, and, as is the case with all diseases, it is better to be there as soon as possible.

What is diabetes?

Diabetes is a condition in which the body has trouble controlling blood sugar levels. Normally, a hormone, insulin, ensures that sugar from food can be absorbed into our cells and used as an energy source. In people with diabetes, something goes wrong with insulin production or function, causing sugar to build up and the blood to not be absorbed into the cells. This can lead to health problems.

What is the difference between diabetes type 1 and 2?

There are different types of diabetes, but the two most common are type 1 and type 2. Type 1 is typically seen in younger people and is the result of a fault in the immune system. That system attacks the cells in the pancreas that are responsible for producing insulin. As a result, the sugar cannot flow to the cells and remains stuck in the blood. Type 2 is the most common form: the pancreas does produce insulin, but due to genetic factors and a chronic oversupply of sugar, the cells become less sensitive to that insulin. The body compensates for this by producing even more insulin, but in the long term this is not sustainable.

How likely are you to have diabetes?

Are you over 45, do you have family members with diabetes or are you worried? Then fill in the questionnaire on afrilatest and see if you have an increased risk. Do you have questions after taking the test? Then make an appointment with your GP to discuss the results.
