Polio vaccine drops to be replaced by injectable vaccine
– how to remain healthy, health related news, latest symptoms and treatments.
Last Friday (20), the Ministry of Health released a note indicating the replacement of oral polio vaccines in drops with injectable doses of the safer and more effective inactivated polio vaccine (IPV). The change is expected to take place by November 4; the replacement is based on epidemiological, scientific and international recommendations.
The decision to replace it was discussed extensively by groups representing the scientific community with the National Council of Health Secretaries (Conass), the National Council of Municipal Health Secretaries (Conasems) and monitoring by the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and the World Health Organization (WHO).
Vaccination mascot “Zé Gotinha”
The official mascot for the polio vaccination campaign, “Zé Gotinha”, is the vaccination brand created by artist Darlan Rosa in 1986. It was initially created to raise awareness about polio vaccination, but over the years it has been used to represent vaccine-preventable diseases such as measles. Despite the change in the polio vaccination method used, “Zé Gotinha” will continue to be the official mascot for the vaccination campaign. The immunization figure has even won the award given to the best figures in the digital universe at the IBest 2024 awards, in the Brand Persona category. The award is currently considered one of the biggest awards in the country for internet personalities.

VIP Scheme
Vaccination will be carried out on a schedule of one dose at two months of age, a second dose at four months of age, a third dose at six months of age and a booster dose at 15 months of age. The Ministry of Health has already sent recommendations for the collection of OPVs and has already authorized the replacement of the OPV booster dose with VIP. Despite this change in the application method, people who have already vaccinated their children using the drop method do not need to worry because it is just as effective as the injection. The measure was taken to update the system and ensure the modernization of the vaccination schedule.
