Potter debuts at Chelsea – A week after his appointment, Graham Potter is finally on the bench as Chelsea manager for the first time on Wednesday evening. The Englishman, who succeeded Thomas Tuchel at Stamford Bridge, knows that with a Champions League match against Red Bull Salzburg he immediately falls for the cake.

“I don’t think I’ve ever been to a Champions League match if I put it off my mind,” Potter said at his press conference on Tuesday, according to the BBC . “My experiences in the Champions League are mainly that of a supporter. It is a good time to go into the dugout.”

The 47-year-old Potter was appointed by Chelsea last week as successor to Tuchel, who had to give way after seven games this season. Last week’s 1-0 defeat at Dinamo Zagreb proved to be the last straw for new owner Todd Boehly.

With Potter, Chelsea brought in a manager who has no experience in the European top. The Englishman was previously a trainer at the Swedish Östersunds, Swansea City and Brighton & Hove Albion.

“This is a completely different challenge than the one at Brighton”

Potter already gained experience in Europe at Östersunds. In the 2017/2018 season, the Swedish club reached the knockout stage of the Europa League in a group with Athletic Club, Hertha BSC and Zorya Luhansk.

Although Potter had been in his place at Brighton for years, he said he couldn’t possibly say no to Chelsea’s offer. “You also look at tradition, quality, the size of a club and the ambitions.

The challenge for me is completely different from the challenge I had at Brighton.”

“I’ve had three fantastic years at Brighton, but I’m very grateful that Chelsea have confidence in me. My main job is to make the players better and put a team on the pitch that the supporters can be proud of. We want a create their own, recognizable identity and will fight for it every day.”

The game between Chelsea and Red Bull Salzburg starts on Wednesday at 9 p.m. at Stamford Bridge. The Austrians played their first game in group E against AC Milan: 1-1.
