Premier League clubs will be allowed to change five times during league matches from next season. With this, the English league follows the example of the other European top leagues.

The new rule was laid down at a shareholders’ meeting in which all clubs participated. At the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic, coaches in England were allowed to change five times for a short time, but that rule was reversed in December 2020.

A number of managers spoke out against that decision at the time.

According to, among others, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp and Manchester City manager Josep Guardiola, the limit of three substitutions was one of the causes of a wave of muscle injuries within their team.

With the decision, the Premier League follows the advice of the international rules committee IFAB, which recently indicated that it is in favor of five substitutions.

Competitions can decide for themselves whether they continue to use the possibility to change five times.

In the three European club tournaments and the competitions in Spain, Italy, Germany and France, among others, the rule of five substitutions is already in force this season.

FIFA is in favour of the new rule and in all likelihood coaches at the World Cup in Qatar will also be allowed to bring in five fresh forces.

Also in the Eredivisie, coaches were allowed to make five changes in the 2020/2021 season.

In the Netherlands, it was then decided to maintain the regulations with a view to the full playing calendar.
