President of the Board of Corinthians accepts impeachment request against Augusto

The president of the Corinthians Deliberative Council, Romeu Tuma Júnior, accepted the impeachment request against the club's president, Augusto Melo last Friday (30), the request was attached to the investigation that is already underway in the Ethics Committee, the investigation refers to Corinthians' sponsorship contract with VaideBet.

The São Paulo club decided to terminate the master sponsorship contract with VaideBet, after the company activated an anti-corruption clause, following the investigation of an alleged shell company involved in brokering the sponsorship agreement.

Corinthians Impeachment Process

Tuma's decision to attach the request to the investigation could prolong the conclusion of the case, in which the club's president could be removed from office. However, according to article 107 of the club's statute, there is a shorter period of approximately one month.

After receiving the subpoena, the current president of Alvinegro will have 10 days to present his defense and produce evidence in the process. The Ethics Committee does not have a defined deadline for the conclusion, which could prolong the trial.

Judgment will depend on the Ethics Committee

The trial will be conducted by the club's Deliberative Council, and will only be concluded after the opinion of the Ethics Committee. A vote will be held by the Corinthians board members, and if the majority of them vote in favor of impeachment, a meeting of the club's members will be called to make a final decision on whether Augusto Melo will be removed from his position as president.

Corinthians Statute: Article 107 and the dismissal procedure

Corinthians has a procedure established in article 107 of the club's statute, below are the main points for the dismissal of a president.

Forwarding to the Ethics Committee: The president of the Deliberative Council forwards the impeachment request to the Ethics and Discipline Committee within five days of receipt.

Notification to the defendant: The Ethics Committee has five days, after receiving the request, to notify the defendant.

Deadline for defense: The president under investigation has a period of 10 days, after notification, to present his defense and the evidence he wishes to produce.

Opinion of the Ethics Committee: After the defense period, the Ethics Committee will have 10 days to prepare an opinion and deliver it to the president of the Deliberative Council.

Deliberative Council Session: In a specially convened session, the Deliberative Council will deliberate on the request for dismissal, with the presentation of arguments from both the Ethics Committee and the defendant or his/her legal representative.

Council Vote: The plenary of the Deliberative Council votes in a secret ballot on the request for dismissal of the president or his vice-presidents.

General Assembly: If the impeachment is approved by the Council, a General Assembly of members must be called within five days for the final vote.

The current president of Corinthians, Augusto Melo, took office in January of this year, his term ends on December 31, 2026. The scandal involving the company VaideBet generated annoyance among associates and fans.
