PSV coach Schmidt will definitely start at Benfica after this season,

PSV coach Roger Schmidt moves permanently to Benfica after this season. The Portuguese club has reached an agreement in principle with the German, it was announced on Wednesday.

The 55-year-old Schmidt had already announced in February that he was not going to extend his expiring contract with PSV. The German did not want to continue in Eindhoven after two seasons, even though PSV wanted to continue with him.

A month after his announced departure, various media from Portugal and Germany reported that Schmidt had secretly sat down with benfica’s club management. Schmidt did not want to go into those speculations at the time.

Benfica reports wednesday that an agreement in principle with Schmidt has been reached. It is not yet clear for how many years he has signed in Lisbon.

At Benfica, Schmidt is the successor of Nélson Veríssimo, who has been the interim coach since the dismissal of Jorge Jesus in December. Under his leadership, the Portuguese record champion eliminated Ajax in the eighth finals of the Champions League.

In the quarter-finals, Liverpool proved to be too strong. In the Portuguese league, Benfica is third, a long way from leader FC Porto and number two Sporting CP.

For Schmidt, Benfica will be his eighth club as a coach. Previously, the former midfielder was in charge of Delbrücker SC, SC Preussen Münster, SC Paderborn 07, Red Bull Salzburg, Bayer Leverkusen, Beijing Guoan and thus PSV.

In his last months in Eindhoven, Schmidt experiences his most successful period at PSV. A week and a half ago, he seized the KNVB cup with the 24-time national champion. In the final in De Kuip, Ajax was defeated 2-1 after falling behind.

After the Johan Cruijff Scale in August, the cup win was the second prize of the season for PSV. In the battle for the supercup, the Brabanders won with even bigger figures from the rival from Amsterdam.

A third prize is still one of PSV’s possibilities, although the title battle seems to be decided in Ajax’s favor. With four games to play, Schmidt’s team is four points behind the Amsterdam leader. On Sunday, PSV will host willem II.

In a European context, PSV had to swallow a large deception. The Eindhoven team was eliminated in the quarter-finals of the Conference League by Leicester City, after they also had to blow the retreat in the play-offs of the Champions League and the group stage of the Europa League.
