PSV opens Europa League with draw

PSV started the group stage of the Europa League with a draw on Tuesday. After a spectacular match, the meeting with Spanish number four Real Sociedad ended in 2-2.

PSV took the lead through Mario Götze after more than half an hour, but less than two minutes later Adnan Januzaj equalised again. Alexander Isak, who played on loan at Willem II two years ago, put Sociedad ahead shortly before half-time.

The Eindhoven team came back strong and equalized through Cody Gakpo in the 54th minute. PSV had the best of the game in the remainder of the game, but coach Roger Schmidt’s team failed to force the winning goal.

In injury time, Jordan Teze hit the post with a phenomenal shot, while half a minute later goalkeeper Joël Drommel prevented Sociedad from making an excellent save with the win.

PSV had actually hoped to play Champions League this season, but were narrowly eliminated by SL Benfica in the play-offs of the million-ball. As a result, there was nothing left for the Brabanders to do but play at the second-highest European level.

AS Monaco-Sturm Graz, the other match in Group B, ended in 1-0. The French team is therefore in the lead in the pool of PSV after one round. PSV will continue the Europa League in two weeks with an away game against Sturm Graz.
