PSV Women win a prize for the first time
PSV Women took a prize on Saturday for the first time in club history. The Eindhoven-team won the KNVB Cup by beating ADO Den Haag 1-0 in the final in Almere.
Under the watchful eye of eight hundred spectators, Joëlle Smits became the celebrated woman on the side of PSV. The forward, who played her last game for the Brabanders and left for VfL Wolfsburg, nettled the only goal in the 38th minute.
ADO had missed a penalty that had been very skilful. Janou Levels appealed after a scrimmage from a corner kick for hands, but then got the ball falling down on her raised arm. (PSV Women win a prize for the first time)
Fortunately for Levels, Sari van Veenendaal stopped the effort of Gwyneth Hendriks and the goalkeeper then also saved on a free kick from Hendriks and a header from Annouk Boshuizen. Smits failed to make it 2-0 at the other end.
PSV had been in the cup final twice before, but lost to Ajax in 2017 and 2018. The team led the Eredivisie last year, but was not declared champions because the competition was prematurely cancelled due to the corona crisis.
This season PSV had to leave the dutch title to FC Twente. ADO, which won the cup in 2012, 2013 and 2016, finished fourth in the Eredivisie.
