Rafael works on his muscles for his last game before retirement
– international sports, latest sports news, local games and international games

Away from the field for approximately five months, right-back Rafael is closer to returning to the field for Botafogo. He is currently undergoing physiotherapy and weight training to recover the muscle mass lost during the treatment process for the injury to his left knee. He will soon begin working on the field.

The player ruptured his patellar tendon in the middle of last year and was out for eight months. But when he returned at the end of March, he suffered a fractured patella in the same knee weeks later, and has not played for Glorioso since April, having only played in three matches in 14 months.

The medical team has been acting cautiously regarding the athlete's return. Rafael will be trained separately before entering the field before training with the ball. The full-back's contract with Botafogo ends at the end of the year, when he has already announced that he will retire. With this scenario, Rafael is trying to recover so that he can at least play a farewell match for the team. In his four seasons, he has accumulated, so far, 39 games wearing the black and white jersey.

Understanding the injury

Patellar tendon injury is an inflammation of the tendon. The tendon is located just below the patella and connects it to the tibia, the bone in the leg.
Although this type of injury is rare, it is more common among athletes, as they repeatedly use the decelerating mechanism of the knee extensor muscle.

Rafael Pereira

He began his career as an amateur in Boa Esperança, playing as a striker. He has a twin brother, Fábio. The two were spotted by a representative of Fluminense when they were playing football in their neighborhood, and were invited to join the club at the age of 11, but never played for the first team. Rafael ended up signing a contract with Manchester and on November 8, 2008, at the age of 18, Rafael scored his first professional goal for the team. The player replaced Neville in injury time of the game against Arsenal, at the Emirates Stadium. He played for Lyon in 2015, where he stayed for four seasons. In 2020, he went to Turkey and played for İstanbul Başakşehir, ending his stay in August 2021.

It was officially announced by Botafogo on September 8, 2021. He and his twin brother Fábio were fans of the club as children.
