Red Bull CEO Helmut Marko is trying to put Sergio Pérez on edge in the run-up to the Hungarian Grand Prix on Sunday afternoon. According to the influential advisor, the 32-year-old Mexican is certainly not getting the most out of the RB18.

Pérez only qualified eleventh for the race at the Hungaroring on Saturday. According to Marko, that result fits into a pattern: the Mexican is currently “far too far behind Max Verstappen”.

“He was already struggling during the training sessions. We just have to sit around the table. The summer break has not yet started, but he seems to be in holiday mode,” said a very critical Marko in conversation with the German Sky Sport.

“If you are a second slower than Verstappen in the first free practice, then you can no longer make up for that. We saw that in a few races last year as well. At the time we could still change that, hopefully we can do that this time.”

Horner predicts busy race for Red Bull

Not only Pérez, but also Verstappen was sentenced to an overtaking race in Hungary on Sunday afternoon. As a result of an engine problem, the world champion starts tenth. According to team boss Christian Horner, Verstappen would otherwise have “at least qualified fourth”.

“And we certainly had a chance on the first row of the grid,” Horner told Sky Sport. “Fortunately, it happened on Saturday and not Sunday. We are tenth and eleventh on the grid, so it will be a busy race.”

The Hungarian Grand Prix starts on Sunday at 15:00. World Championship leader Verstappen cherishes a lead of no less than 63 points on first pursuer Charles Leclerc of Ferrari. Pérez is third with seventy points less than the Dutchman.
