Review: Motorola Razr is unlucky that the Galaxy Z Flip4 exists

The Motorola Razr with a foldable screen from 2020 gets a successor. It is now available in the Netherlands and costs 1,199 euros.

Foldable phones haven’t exactly taken over the world yet. Although they have been available for about three years, only a small part of the Dutch have a phone that can be folded. This is evident from recent figures from Telecom paper. Especially the high price is holding people back for the time being.

The choice is also not huge. In the Netherlands you can buy a Samsung Galaxy Z Fold or a Z Flip, but with that the biggest competitors for Lenovo’s Motorola Razr have been mentioned.

It is therefore up to Lenovo to stand out with its folding phone and to put it sharply in the market. The Motorola Razr has its name in any case. In the early years of this millennium, the Motorola Razr made a furore as a flip phone. Then without a folding screen, but with a physical keyboard and a screen above the hinge. So it makes sense that the brand name returned when folding phones became somewhat popular.

Wider screen, wobbly hinge

The new model also folds in half lengthwise. On the inside, the phone has a 6.7-inch screen. Compared to its big competitor, the Z Flip4, it is a bit wider. That types a lot more pleasantly. The fold is also virtually invisible. However, the phone has a striking edge around the screen, which in turn does not look very nice.

The Motorola Razr also has a somewhat wobbly hinge. You can fold the screen into multiple positions, but it does not feel very sturdy.

When folded, the phone has a screen of 2.7 inches. That’s a lot bigger than the smaller screen on the Galaxy Z Flip4 (1.9 inches). This also makes it a lot more usable. You can use it to open all apps, so that you can also reply to messages without opening. That’s a bit of a prickly thing. It is even possible to watch YouTube videos on it.

Cameras are okay, not great

In terms of camera, we are now a little more used to phones of more than 1,000 euros. The Razr has a standard lens (50 megapixels) and a wide-angle lens (13 megapixels), but lacks a zoom lens. However, close-up images are possible with the macro mode.

The photos are of varying quality. In good light, the results are usually fine, but the autofocus is not always fast enough, and in less light, details are sometimes lost. Also, colors are sometimes pumped up a little too much, so that the sky is also bright blue in the evening.

The zoom lens is a loss, especially because the digital zoom falls short. With that you can zoom in up to eight times, but in practice it is better not to do that, because the images are very grainy.

So you don’t buy the Razr 2022 for its cameras. You buy a folding phone because it folds, and it does. The small screen is useful when the phone is folded and the wider screen is nice to type. In general, it is therefore a fine Android phone with a good screen and a fast processor with which you can easily run all the apps you want.

In principle, you can therefore move forward with it for a number of years. At least, if you settle for just two Android updates and three years of security updates.

The Motorola Razr is certainly 100 euros more expensive than the Galaxy Z Flip4 from Samsung. And that is ultimately better finished, with a firmer hinge and slightly better cameras. Since folding phones are fairly new, the real enthusiasts settle for a higher price. But for the same money, you simply buy a better phone with a flat screen. Until that changes, the folding phone market is likely to remain a niche.
