Rita Lee is honored during the ceremony

Today (04) the 66th edition of the Grammy Awards is taking place, the most important award in the music industry, which honors professionals and works from various areas of music. In a traditional moment of the ceremony, the Grammy Academy pays tribute to the main names in music who died during the previous year. And this year, one of the honorees was the Brazilian Rita Lee, who died in May of last year.

Tributes to the queen of Brazilian rock

In 2022, Rita Lee was honored at the Latin Grammy Awards in Las Vegas. The rock singer received the Lifetime Achievement Award, a recognition of her lifetime achievement and career. Aloysio Reis, businessman and advisor to the Latin Grammy Awards, and singer Giulia B were chosen to pay tribute.

In 2021, Rita was diagnosed with lung cancer. After treatment, she was cured of the disease, but was recovering. However, the queen of Brazilian rock died at the age of 75, in São Paulo, on the evening of May 8th. The news was confirmed the following day in a post on the official social media of the singer and her husband, Roberto de Carvalho.

After her death, Rita Lee released a second autobiography, where she recalled the moments she suffered since she was diagnosed with cancer, according to her, discovered when she went to take the second dose of the covid19 vaccine.

Tributes mark the 2024 Grammy Awards

In addition to Rita, other music stars were honored at the awards ceremony. Astrud Gilberto, Tina Turner, Sinead O'Connor and Tony Bennett. Stevie Wonder, Annie Lennox, Wendy & Lisa sang in the performance, Jon Batiste and Fantasia were also mentioned at the ceremony.

Fantasia Barrino paid a beautiful tribute to Tina Turner on stage. Along with dancers, the artist performed “Rolling On The River”, one of her most successful songs. And after the tributes on the big screen, Oprah Winfrey gave a speech in honor of the rocker, who died on May 24, 2023.
