Round 36 is the highest scoring round of the Brazilian Championship

This Sunday's matches (1) put an end to the 36th round of the Brazilian Championship, but with a record number of goals in the 2024 Brasileirão season. There were a total of 36 goals scored in ten matches, an average of 3.6 goals per game. Previously, the round with the most goals was the 31st, with 33 goals scored.

Round 36 numbers

On Saturday (30), the match between Criciúma and Corinthians was the one that resulted in the most goals, in the São Paulo team's victory 4×2, generating six goals scored. Atlético-MG 2×3 Juventude and Flamengo 3×2 Internacional, with five goals scored each, were close behind.

In addition to these games, there was also Cuiabá 1×2 Bahia; Vasco 2×2 Atlético-GO; Grêmio 2×1 São Paulo; Bragantino 1×1 Cruzeiro; Athletico-PR 1×1 Fluminense; Victory 2×0 Fortaleza and the early game of Palmeiras 1×3 Botafogo. Fortaleza was the only team not to score a goal in this round, preventing all teams from scoring goals in the same round for the first time in the 2024 edition.

Brazilian Championship numbers

In total, 877 goals were scored in 360 matches in this Brazilian Championship, an average of around 2.4 goals per match. Palmeiras remains the team that scored the most goals, with 58, followed by Botafogo and Flamengo, with 56 goals scored. Internacional (53) and São Paulo (51), are the other two teams that surpassed the 50 goal mark in the competition.

After the end of the round, the Brasileirão started to have new top scorers. Alerrando, from Vitória, and Yuri Alberto, from Corinthians, scored twice each over the weekend, and reached 13 goals in the championship, enough to surpass Estevão, from Palmeiras, who didn't score against Botafogo and continued with 12.

If the competition ended today, the edition's top scorer would have the lowest number of goals since 1990, when Charles was top scorer for Bahia, with just 11 goals. In the era of running points, the 2016 season holds the record so far, with 14 goals scored, when Fred, Pottker and Diego Souza were the top scorers.
